Savile Road, Halifax
« on: Tuesday 09 March 10 09:40 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to sort out some obvious confusion in my mind between several places in Halifax called Savile Place / Savile Green / Savile House any or all of which seem to be on [21 or 23] Savile Road.

Could some kind soul tell me where the following people were registered in censuses around the dates shown

Stansfield Rawson [1820?]
Francis Rawson [1845]
R. Kershaw Lumb [1845]
Rev Charles Musgrave [1852].

Any help to preserve my sanity, or what's left of it, would be much appreciated.

Hi Malcolm

This is a tough one! I can't find any of the people you mention in Savile Road on any census, but I've had a look at the relevant images in 1901 and 1891.

1891 Savile Green has 4 dwellings, address given as Savile Green, Savile Road, then comes Savile Grove (1 dwelling), then 15,17,19,21,23 Savile Road, Savile House (1 dwelling) Savile Lea (1 dwelling)

1901 Wellhead Lane, Savile Lodge (1 dwelling), Saville Green (5 dwellings), Savile Grove (1 dwelling), Kirby Leas (1 dwelling), then 17,19, Savile Road, Savile Place (1 dwelling), 23 Savile Road.

It looks to me as if the houses in Savile Road  acquired house names and dropped the numbers over time. Savile Green looks like a little group of houses in Savile Road with a distinct address.

Hope this helps a bit!

Thanks for the responses.

Anne, it does seem that there was a fairly casual approach to the addresses and the names of their houses over the years.  It looks like it might be best for me to list the names you give as being in Savile Road, and then trying to group them into sections as you indicate.

At this stage, Lizdb, I am just trying to sort out the houses in Savile Road, and not so much the people mentioned.  It's just the addresses where the named people were living around the dates shown that are my main concern just now.

Thanks again

Censuses were 1841, 51 61 etc, so will not help with the dates you list 1820, '45 and '52.

If the Stansfield I found was the same person, he wasnt born in 1820! Maybe it was another one you were interested in.
If you do want any of the people listed looking for in any of the censuses, then it would help to know theior approxe year of birth, place of birth if known and other members of their family if known.

Thank you again.  As I said, it's not the people, it's the houses on Savile Road, that I am interested in.  I suppose the most valuable information that I could hope for is

1) The census year

2) The addresses on Savile Road [and the name of the house if this is other than a number]

3) The names of the main occupants

and then, pushing my luck, details [names, ages] of the family members there.

Any or all of that would find a good home on my Calderdale Companion.

Just come across this.   The attchd is Savile Place - numbered as 21 and 21A (lower wing ) Savile Rd.  It's all been flats for over 40 years.    Savile Green (23) is a house lower down on the opposite side of the road also I believe now sub-divided.  The two Rawsons mentioned were part of the extended Rawson family mainly based in the Sowerby/Sowerby Bridge area.

Also - the last owner occupier of 21A was Monica Clay.  Her Parents were Cllr Howard Clay and Elizabeth Fisher Clay (American artist).  I believe all of Savile Place is still owned by their American relatives.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
