Looking for info on my family who served in WW1
« on: Tuesday 09 March 10 11:24 GMT (UK) »
Hey everyone,

During the great war 8 relatives of mine (all of whom were brothers) served in WW1. I'm looking for any info on these brothers and their regiments.

Charlie, Thomas, Albert, Hugh, Joe, Billy, Adam and George joined them; six to the Royal Irish Rifles, part of the famous 36th Ulster division, one to the Royal Engineers and one to the Cameronian Scottish Rifles.

I know that Thomas and Albert paid the ultimate sacrifice but wondered if anyone may have any info on the rest and their action during the war.

Kind regards

Andy

It would help if you could post the surname.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The family is in 1911 census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Magheragall/Magheragall/199649/

ame:     Albert Hawthorn
Birth Place:    Magheragall, CO. Antrim
Residence:    Lisburn, CO. Antrim
Death Date:    2 Sep 1918
Enlistment Location:    Magheragall, CO. Antrim
Rank:    Rifleman
Regiment:    Royal Irish Rifles
Battalion:    12th Battalion.
Number:    2534
Type of Casualty:    Killed in action

To find out what they were doing, you need to ascertain the battalion for each man like this, then research that battalion

If you start here, you get a precis of what the regiment did

You can also get their Medal Index Cards on Ancestry.com, the index is complete, and that will tell you what medals they got

You can also look on Ancestry to see if any of their service records still exist, problem is the majority were destroyed in WW2, so it is just luck if your men are there.

Hi Daphne & Andy

interested in your series of posts, do either of you have info on Albert or a picture. I have seen, I have a copy of a very poor quality picture of thomas abert and charles at ballykinlar in 1915. I understand it came from the local paper in the sixties.

Andy you were posting on antrim board earlier I think

bye
