See Wills and Death Duty Records, after 1858
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=219

You can download an application form to obtain a will, if it exists at http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/courtfinder/forms/pa1s_0405.pdf

Are you sure he left a will?

The only place that has a full set of the calendars /indexes of wills is the Principal Registry in Holborn, London.

The following link may be helpful:

You can also order copies by post. The address for requests by post is York Probate Sub-Registry, First Floor, Castle Chambers, Clifford Street, York, YO1 7EA. The same applies to letters of administration, which are granted if no valid will was made or found.
as I pointed out you can download an application form to obtain a copy of a will, if it exists at http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/courtfinder/forms/pa1s_0405.pdf

Pretty sure he left a will as he owned a grocers in hertford and his sons brought a bookshop in Old Bond Street London around 1808 after his death.

1797 is different

National Archives has many Wills - from 1384 to 1858 for GBP 3.50  http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

One of sites linked from TNA is A2A http://www.a2a.org.uk/ which is a catalogue of enormous archives and some will be Wills

Some Wills can be in a County Record Offices - some of mine came from PRO some from Oxford Record Office - Wills from around England are being collected here  www.rootsweb.com/~engsurry/
Ron was born in Shepherds Bush and "knew" London fairly well

If he had property in both Bedford and Hertford then the National Archives are the most likely source.  Some other wills were proved by the Province of Canterbury  anyway and will be there.

If he just had property in Bedford then you were correct to look in the Bedfordshire record office.

If he had property in Hertford and not in Bedford then because Hertford was in the diocese of Lincoln, as it was not at HALS, you may have to try the Lincolnshire record office.

If you meant the counties rather than the towns of Bedford and Hertford, then particularly for the latter, the place where a will was deposited is very dependent on which parish is involved.

Hi thank you for all the replies - John was buried and died in Shefford  Bedford but have checked there and no luck he was living in Hertford itself  in 1785 and checked there but no luck will try the Lincoln one next
