Hi Annie,

I think this is one of two places in the old Province of Ulster (i.e the nine counties in the north of Ireland) - either Dunnyboe in Co. Tyrone or Dungoe in Co. Monaghan

Have you any surnames that might throw some light on the situation (in some cases a surname is more popular in some areas then others). Is this word on a birth / death certificate or marriage licence ? If you have any further information I may be able to confirm that I am pointing you in the right area.

http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/ - IreAtlas townland search.
I tried the first three letters at the start of the word, then the last three at the end and suitable combinations of letters anywhere in the word. It was all very unhelpful.
I then tried " Don " and was offered a choice of 99 possible places, " Do " gave 591 possibles and nothing jumped out as being the right place. I thought " Go for it " and tried " D ". This produced a list of 5490 possible places but strange to say made it easier to find the two places I've mentioned.

Best Wishes, Christopher

Sorry Annie,

Stupid me ! I'm so accustomed to replying to queries about town names I did not stop to think.

Tipperary is a possible county in which to do research. I will do another check including spelling variations and post a further message.

Christopher

Annie,

Is Liverpool your location ? It may have a bearing on the county in Ireland from which your ancestor came. A fairly large number of people from the northern counties of Ireland moved to England or Scotland rather than emigrate to America. There are not such good records for these movements as there are for the emigration to America as they were going from one part of the UK to another part of the UK. Ireland was part of the UK from 1801 to 1922.

Hi Christopher! I was born and raised in Liverpool -  but I now live in Colorado USA - but this particular Donehoo came to the U.S. - probably through Liverpool (  because ... as you know -  Liverpool is the capital of Ireland...............!! ) and that's about all I know -  hence my original question
about where that particuliar name might have come from.... I believe I have other lines in Donegal -  but I don't think this one is from there! Annie

Donoghue, Donahoe are the more normal ways of spelling the surname, it originated in Co Cork then moved to Kerry... there are two more branches from Galway and Clare.

It is sometimes found as O'Donoghue too.. these would have been mainly in Tipperary...

Another variation is Mc/Mac Donough .. and Mc/Mac Donagh all in all confusing.

because the Boats left Ireland and one of the easiest destinations was Liverpool hence the big Irish connection to that City...

The best of luck in your research
