Completed - Baptism St Mary Lambeth - Alfred Broadhurst
« on: Thursday 11 March 10 17:09 GMT (UK) »
Please does anyone have access to the PR for St Mary, Lambeth?

IGI has the baptism of Alfred Broadhurst  26 April 1820 and gives father as Robert and mother as James.

Could someone check who the parents actually are as I don't think my ancestors were that progressive.

thanks

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

There is another Broadhurst baptism 2 years later of  a Robert Michael 30 Jan 1822 at St Mary Lambeth, with parents James and Mary, could this be a brother?  There is also at least one later baptism with the same parents.

Although it says Robert & James, it should say James & Mary. This is based on baptisms of what are pretty obviously siblings. I say this because of identical abodes and occupations.

thanks to you both for the quick replies.

I wondered about James and Mary, I saw the other baptisms on IGI.

Unfortunately Alfred had left home by the 1841 census so I couldn't confirm.

Hi

Robert Michael Broadhurst was buried at St Mark Kennington in 1827.
Elizabeth Ellen Broadhurst was buried at the same church in 1826.

Alfred Broadhurst on the 1851 census was married to Louisa J aged 21 and living in Paddington. He was aged 30 and born St Mark's Kennington. His occupation was a sawmill foreman.

15th July 1848 St Matthew, Brixton
Alfred Broadhurst Full Age Bachelor Mercantile Clerk Brixton James Broadhurst Mercantile Clerk
Louisa Jessie Thorpe Minor Spinster Brixton Henry Adolphus Thorpe Bootmaker
Married by banns, both signed
Witnesses Edward ? and Elizabeth ?

James Broadhurst junior a minor who married at St Mary Lambeth in 1849, a baker also put his father as James Broadhurst a mercantile clerk. On the 1851 census he was in Marylebone aged 22 married to Elizabeth and was a porter in a saw mill born Brixton.
William Broadhurst of full age who married in 1867 at St Mary Lambeth, a mill sawyer again gave James Broadhurst mercantile clerk as his father. He was aged 41 on the 1871 census in Lambeth a mill sawyer born Norwood married to Annie. He married in 1867 as a bachelor.
Edward Broadhurst aged 23, a sawyer who married in 1864 at St Luke Norwood also gave his father as James a clerk. On the 1871 census he was aged 29 in Brixton a sawyer born Croydon.

There is a family of Broadhursts in Croydon on the 1841 census parents James (45) and Mary (40) with children Ellen (15), William (10), Mary (4) and Edward (3 months) - adult ages those over 15 are usually rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census and all born Surrey. This James was a lime burner.

On the 1861 census in Lambeth William Broadhurst aged 31 a sawmill labourer born Norwood was 'married' to Eliza. Lodging with them was James Broadhurst, no occupation, a widower born Newington Surrey aged 66.

1851 census HO107 1580 folio 546
2 John's Place ? Road Camberwell
James Broadhurst 57 Head Married Assistant messenger to the bankruptcy court Kennington Surrey
Mary Broadhurst 53 Wife Married Kennington Surrey
Elize Broadhurst 23 Daughter Croydon Surrey
Mary Broadhurst 14 Daughter Croydon Surrey
Edward Broadhurst 8 Son Croydon Surrey

This James appears to have been enumerated twice because he was also lodging in Rougham Suffolk.

Regards

Valda

Thanks for looking up all that info Valda.

I had traced the family forward, it was who Alfred's parents were I could find but it always nice to have
confirmation you have the right people.

thanks again
