Essex 1851 Shenfield ...Perry and Noble
« on: Monday 21 March 05 09:16 GMT (UK) »
Morning all!

Has anyone got the index for Essex 1851?

I`m looking for a family of Perrys , probably in Shenfield , which is where they were all born and are also later to be found.
In 1861 they are all at somewhere called Joy House , High Street , Billericay.

Frances  ...mother
Samuel...son born c 1819
Arthur... son born c 1833

and all other family members , which should be quite a few.It was a big family ,loads of daughters.

Related to this family is the NOBLE family , ( Ann and her son William)
I think they may be in Essex too , probably in the same vicinity.

Grateful for any help

Rebel

First, thanks a lot for all the info.Just a case of sorting it out!

All those names and same ages from 1841 are very confusing, but it`s deinitely the right family. They don`t turn up on the IGI.
I think perhaps there maybe grandchildren mixed in there,or perhaps nephews and nieces.
As the head of  family is listed as schoolmaster, maybe it`s possible they were sunday school children?? ( grasping at straws here)

And does anybody know what an usher is?
Is it anything clerical? At least 2 sons go on to become vicars....

As always , the more you find out , the less you know!

Thanks all

Ah,I think I`ve been blinded by the early spring sun!!

Of course ,In the 1841 census , the ages were rounded up or down ,can`t remember which , to the next five years. That would explain all those triplets!

By the way ,did the 1841 census say for the parents born in Essex?

Appears to be the case.
Instructions say ages over 15 to be rounded.  (down)
Comparing other pages, this enumerator seems to have rounded all ages over 5.

ALL born Essex.

I too had forgotten about age rounding!!
Unless proved to the contrary, i would take this as a straight family of mum dad and children. There are no repeats of names that you might expect if there were nephews or grandchildren involved.
It was not unusual to have big families, even this big!! And the mum would have been between about 20 and 40 when she had then - so all quite possible.
