Difficult to give you a more precise answer since you haven't put in any date or country but usually death certificate is what you need to find cause of death.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

would a death certificate need to be ordered or can it be "looked up" online? would be for 1800s in Bristol & Cardiff.

Death certificates aren't available for before September 1837, when Civil Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths began.

The commencement of civil registration was 1 July 1837.  For any death on or after that date a certificate can be ordered, but cannot be "looked-up", online or otherwise.

The commencement of civil registration was 1 July 1837.

What I should have said, of course, was that it began at the September quarter of 1837, which begins in July.

Before 1837 you may find (if you are very very lucky  ;D) a church burial record where the vicar has been exceptionally helpful and put in the cause of death.

I have seen some that say things like- fallen from his horse- or 'expired',I guess that was through old age?
