John Kean, Kilmarnock, Census
« on: Monday 21 March 05 11:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I'm searching for John Kean, Shoemaker, of Kilmarnock.  He was married to Maggie Kean (MS Stitt...not sure what that means).
They had a son, Andrew, born in 1895.  They were living at 6 Fowlds St, Kilmarnock, at the time.  I imagine that John was born before 1875 at least.

If anyone else is looking for Keans, would love to know.

If anyone is looking in the 1881 Census, would appreciate details on John and Maggie.

Many thanks
Gaynor

just discovered today that my grandmother Susan Weir Kean had at least 5 siblings!! The eldest being your Andrew Stitt Kean. Their parents were John Kean and Maggie Stitt but I have been unable to find out what happened to any of them after Susan was born in 1907. What do you know? My father never knew any of the family - had a vague idea of a relative in Vancouver and was introduced once as a child to Uncle Jim who came to visit and hadn't seen Susan since they were children (possibly James Jack Kean  b.1903) Susan was born in Galston close to Kilmarnock but there is no trace of family movement after this. Hoping that you have some info on this unknown side of my Dad's family. Looking forward to hearing from you.

That's fantastic!  You must be a second cousin then!

I have just sent you a PM with some more details, but here in brief is the story of Andew Stitt Kean:

Born August 29th 1895 at 7.30 am. at 6 Fowlds St. Kilmarnock, County Ayr to John Kean and Maggie Stitt Kean.

Andrew worked on the railways, and was killed in a train accident on 10th Jan 1943 aged 47 years, at Sheffield Royal Infirmary.

Andrew married Alice Holland on 3rd April 1920.  She was 28 years (and a widow). He was a railway fireman at that time, and they lived at 28 Bloom St, Stockport.

Alice had one child, Hilma, from a previous marriage, and then Andrew and Alice had mum, Margaret Kean.  Alice died when mum was four.  Mum went on to marry Ernest Foster, and they had three children, me (Gaynor), my twin brother, Nicholas, and a younger sister, Valerie.  Nick still lives in the UK, in Oldham, and Val and I live in Australia.

We know very little about any of the other Keans, so anything you can tell us will be wonderful!

How fantastic that we've made contact!
