Richard SHARPS what information could I get from 1858 patent application
« on: Saturday 13 March 10 20:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, thanks for having me  :)

My main research is into the SHARPS family from the Liverpool/Birkenhead area.  I'm currently stuck at Richard Sharps (birth/death not known but probably early 1800s), he was married to Jane FOGG (1814 - 1883).  I have no other information other than he was a Piano Forte Maker.

After doing a search on Google I have found that in 1858 a Richard Sharp (Lowther Street, Liverpool) applied for a patent for an invention for - "improvements in piano-fortes".  This looks to me like the Richard Sharps I am looking for.

What I need to find out is where I can find further information on this patent application and whether it may reveal some more information about Richard Sharps to help me over my brick wall?

I am greatfull for any help, please let me know if you need me to provide more information.

Many thanks,
Pete.

The one paten application that I have found contained the following introduction:

'I, Robert William Edlin, Managing Director, of Edlin Sinclair, Limited, of 26, Sherlock Street, in the City of Birmingham, do declare the nature of this invention......'

The rest of the document was entirely about the technical aspects of the patent: in this case a luggage carrier to be attached to the steering pillar and front forks of a bicycle.  There was no other personal information.

Thanks for the reply David.

Where do you find information on patents?  I was expecting the patent to be to do with improvements in piano manufacturing?

I found mine while researching the history of the Dunlop Tyre Company.  Edlin and Sinclair were involved in the original company and were in fact responsible for the original invention of the pneumatic tyre upon which it was based.

It is always worth trying the London Gazette.

I understand now thanks  8)

I think that limited information would still be very interesting, and more information than I have already! I will keep looking.

Thanks for the help.

I don`t  know if you are looking for census records also, but this may be Jane,  there are lots of clues here for the family.
Jane may be the brother of Robert Fogg.

Where is Jane`s husband   ???  I think I  can see your problem now  ::)

hi wilcoxon, you are exactly right (took me a little longer to figure out though!).   I have been stuck on this question for a while, I have Thomas Sharps' (abt 1837) birth certificate where I found Jane's husband Richard with the profession Piano-forte maker, but other than that and the patent information I can't find him anywhere!

I really dont know where to go next to look now so that's the reason I'm looking into the possible patent for any further information.

I found a couple of records on the IGI ,  the same names, bapt in Liverpool, but they are before July 1837 , that is when registration started.
When was your Thomas born. ???

IGI can be quite useful using batch No`s.
