Received the BEM

The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the British Empire Medal (Military Division) to the undermentioned, in recognition of gallant conduct in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner: —

T/ 215723 Driver Arthur Ernest Churchley, Royal Army Service Corps (Yardley, Birmingham)

Hi

I think you might have wanted the citation although Kyt has brilliantly turned up the LG entry which is a rigmarole in itself.  Since he was Yardley in Birmingham it might be worth contacting the Brum papers as it might have got into there...

Hi there,
Many thanks to everyone for their help !
Have found out a little more - Arthur married a local girl Gertrude Skinner in 1941 - I bet she was very proud of her hero !

From the story the family have, an officer fell overboard and Arthur jumped in and saved him.
Although an honourable thing to do...I am told that many soldiers would 'wish' officers to drown !
