There was no National Health Service, and Hospitals relied on contributions. If there were no funds or charities to pay for someones treatment then the Workhouse Hospital was the only one to go to, especially for the old suffering from dementia etc., for which there was no cure.

In 1848 my ancestor was admitted to ST Marylebone Workhouse aged 57. She died there in February 1851. Her reason for admittance was illness. The exact illness was not stated but she died on a stroke.
