Bassett/Edwards
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 18:03 GMT (UK) »
I am from the U.S. so probably in the wrong place, but I am looking for some information on two families.

All we have for sure is a name of my great grandfather Edwin Bassett Edwards, who presumably came from the North Shields area.  The birth date given is 1857.  We no nothing past this name and place but were told his mother was a Bassett.

Any help would be much appreciated, even if just to tell me I'm looking in the wrong county.  Thank you.

You are in the right county (Northumberland) for North Shields, part of Northumberland up to 1974.

But no good candidates for your Edwin Bassett Edwards from North Shields from census and birth/marriage/death registrations.

For BMD registrations, North Shields lay within the jurisdiction of Tynemouth Registration District.

Plenty of Edwin Edwards registrations but not for Edwin Bassett Edwards in appropriate place at appropriate era.

But the death of a 0 yrs child, Edwin Bassett Edwards, was registered in the September Quarter of 1867 at Tynemouth Reg District.

Then in March Qtr in 1868 the birth of an Edwin Bassett Edwards was registered at Tynemouth Reg District.

Do you know Edwin's parents names ?
Did Edwin leave UK for US ? If so, when ?
What name did he give to his first son ?
What occupation did Edwin follow ?

There is instance of Edwards and Bassett families ( including an Edwin) living in Sunderland area. Sunderland was in County Durham, a southern neighbour of Northumberland ?

The date given for Edwin's birth is December 28, 1857.  Married in 1897, but likely that took place when he reached the US.  Unfortunately I don't have much more information than this.  The family history on my father's side is very sketchy.  Edwin Bassett Edwards, we are told took his mother's maiden name (Bassett) as his middle name.  Edwin went on to marry a woman from Mexico, Maria de Jesus Garcia.  His first son's name is Edwin Bassett Edwards II.

Sunderland is also a possibility.  As I said anything at this point could be a lead.

Thanks for such a quick reply and the info given.

The date given for Edwin's birth is December 28, 1857.

There is a possible birth of an Edwin Edwards in Sunderland, in the 4th quarter (October/November/December) of 1857.

There is also a marriage in Sunderland in the 4th quarter of 1856 between Henry Edwards and Joyce Bassett.

I got another possible lead tonight. Edwin would have a brother, possibly
named Clarence or who had a son named Clarence. It's all so
confusing.  There was a Governor of Louisiana named Edwin Edwards,(born 1927)
son of Clarence Edwards, who is related to Edwin Bassett Edwards.
We think Clarence could be Edwin B Edwards' brother. We know he came here with a brother, I just don't know if Clarence is the right generation.

The 1841 census is the first census in England ( and Wales) to record the names of people.

On the 1841 census in Sunderland (ref 321/9 26-46) there are the following folk in the samehold.

Edwin Bassett 26 yrs, Ag(ricutural) Lab(ourer)
Jane Bassett 20 yrs
J.Joyce Bassett 2
Edwin Bassett 4 months

(None of the above were born in "this" county- County Durham)
1841 census did not record relationalships.

To "support" the above record..
- the marriage of Edwin W Bassett and Jane Sancto was registered with Sunderland Reg District in 1840.

- the birth of Edwin Walker Bassett was registered with Sunderland Reg district in March Qtr 1841 (so birth of this child registered between 1st Jan and 31st March)

1841 census was taken as for the evening of 6th June..

This child was buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery. He was 7 months old, and was the child of Henry Edwards - shipowner. His abode was 29, Northumberland Square, North Shields.

Which might tie up with

a marriage in Sunderland in the 4th quarter of 1856 between Henry Edwards and Joyce Bassett.
