I get quite frustrated with the hot matches especially as they are invariably for people I have already found myself.

But it is strange - I too had an email today from someone who I sent an email to last July. It wasn't a match but at least he eventually got back to me.

I have lots of contacts on GR who have never responded to a request for info.  I do find it very strange. Although if they had changed their email address and not informed GR then they wouldn't receive notifications :(

It's not really that strange.

Things happen in life! studying family history tells us this, if we haven't yet discovered it for ourselves  ;D
People fall in love, get married, have babies, get divorced (not necessarily in that order  ;D
Their parents die, their spouse dies, they get ill or a close family member does, they lose their job, they change their job, there is a wedding to arrange, they have exams to study for, their children get into trouble, all sorts of things happen .....
.... that are far more immediate and important than sleuthing around the old family tree.

It's a hobby, and often has to take a back seat.

It is certainly addictive, but then so are many of my other passtimes. I try to give it around 90 minutes a day, along with archaeology, model trains and other passtimes besides doing shopping etc. etc.Good thing we need less sleep as we get older, however did I find time to go to work!

How about a SUPER Cold Match?

I just received a reply to a message I sent to someone on 28/01/2008. :o

GR never ceases to amaze me.

I can beat that, two days ago I had a reply to a message I sent from 2006. It was so long ago that I had forgotten what I has originally asked them.

They didn't say, just to say they were replying to something I originally sent back in 2006. Needless to say we didn't get anywhere as I since at sorted out the issue that coursed me to drop them a line in the first place.

One problem I have found with contacting people via GR is that you have no idea when they last logged on.  So it could easily be you are contacting someone who has not been on the site for years, or they could even be dead!!!

It's all very well advertising your vast amount of members, but if they are not regular users you could wait ages for a reply

In some cases a medium would be more useful.

Still I keep on using site as I often find some long lost rellie out there.

No, but at least now we can see if the message has been opened or not.  So that's something.
