Information on an 1850s/60s death certificate
« on: Thursday 18 March 10 14:49 GMT (UK) »
Would the death certificate of a widow from this period show her surname before marriage, please ? It isn't featured on any of the census records & I'm having problems identifying her (&, if it would, how do I order a copy ?)

Thanks

None of the death certificates I've received showed the widow's maiden name.

Thanks, Winston

Oh......this is a saga.....I've posted on the relevant county threads & contacted the people with special interests in the surnames etc etc....but....if you insist (this might be connected with the Peaches....by the way, Mum sends her warm wishes & memories of Cyril & Hilda)

According to the census records, my gggg grandmother was born in Titchmarsh, Northamptonshire, but I don't know her surname, but I do know approx when she was born & that she later appears as "Betsy", the wife of Lyon Asher, in Nottingham. With the help of kind people, we've ploughed through the Titchmarsh records & been left with 4 Elizabeths born in Titchmarsh at around the right time that can't be accounted for in death/marriage records (nor can we find a marriage for Betsy & Lyon)

These are as follows (all dates are for baptisms in Titchmarsh)

Elizabeth Peach 12/7/1789
Elizabeth Greene 18/3/1791
Elizabeth Barefield 9/4/1792
Elizabeth Colson 11/6/1800

Elizabeth Peach & Elizabeth Barefield might be particularly interesting. Elizabeth Peach because, as Winston will know, a Peach family who originally came from  Brampton, Huntingdonshire (ie, not that far from Titchmarsh) were good friends of my father's family in Nottingham & Cyril Peach was my godfather (&, I think, my father's best man)....so I'm wondering if they were distant relatives through Elizabeth &, when Cyril's family moved up to Nottingham, they naturally got in touch with one another. Elizabeth Barefield.....she had a brother named George & someone who I think was either a brother/nephew/cousin of my gggg grandfather (William Asher), named his first child George Bayfield Asher. Apparently, if you say Barefield with a Northants accent, it will sound like Bayfield to Nottingham ears, so it may be the case that George Barefield was a very good friend of William Asher's & William named his son after him (can't find a family connection with Bayfield)....which would imply that William & Lyon could very well also have known Elizabeth Barefield.

I've looked at Lyon's will but there are no clues there....it's driving me mad......

Any suggestions welcome
