Where is Burwood ?
« on: Thursday 18 March 10 22:55 GMT (UK) »
I have a Thomas Williams age 83 living with his daughter and her family in East Bedfont Berkshire in the 1851 census. Thomas is a retired lock smith . Both he and his daughter Mary Garrard are listed as being born in Burwood Staffordshire. I have used a variety of maps and can not find Burwood. Google suggested Burntwood. Does Burwood exist In Staffordshire? ???and if so can some one please tell me what towns Burwood is near. Thank you

Burntwood in Staffordshire, is about four miles down the road from Cannock. It's midway between Cannock and Lichfield

Obviously Thomas won't appear in the next census but have you had a look to see where Mary says she's from in 1861?

Possibly also consider boundary changes and misspellings ...  :-\

Was the listing of birth on the actual copy of the census, or was it just the transcribed record? I've seen some wonderful non-places on some of the trancriptions!! ;D ;D

I agree! I've just pulled the census on Ancestry and I'd say 99% Brewood

Tony

Actually, make that 100%!!

Thanks for the ideas, so there is no Burwood in Staffordshire and Brewood it is  :).It is also a good idea to ask for a census look-up of the 1861 census.

Couldn't find either on the 1861 census! It's a strong possibility that Thomas had died by 1861 as he would have been 93. Mary would have been 64 so again the possibility that she too may not have been alive.
