Can anyone help date family photo please?
« on: Friday 19 March 10 21:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi
This photo was recently given to me.  All I have been able to work out is that the 'father' is one of my great grandfather's brothers who were born between 1860-1870.  (He is in another family photo with the brothers).
Was there any protocol in these family groups which might help in deciding who is who?  I wondered whether the men in the back row are husbands to the girls they are with?
Many thanks
Heather

Hello Heather
What a lovely picture. Was there a dressmaker in the family?
For a date I would say early 1900's.The little puffball sleeves on the girls signalled the end of the Gigot sleeve which dominated the 1890's.The pigeon fronted blouse & lacy collars was also a trend of this time.
The youngest are seated on the ground which is the usual place for children in large group photos like ths with the youngest of these being on the right as she has the shortest skirt & probably around 13/14.
Of the younger women a least 2 are married, the one between mom & dad is probably the oldest & probably married to the man behind with his hand on her shoulder.Extreme left & right  are 2 more daughters.
None of these look old enough to have children at least 13 years old except possibly the oldest daughter who looks early 30's so one can only assume the 3 at the front are more daughters.
The chap on his own may be a son or fiancee to the woman on the left.

Hi Jim,
Thanks so much for your very interesting insight.  This has helped me to make a link with a part of the family tree which my grandfather scribbled very roughly on the back of an envelope!  I will show this to my dad and hope that we can fill in some more gaps.
I'm not sure about a dressmaker ... the only thing I didn't mention is that the parents were born in Germany and came to the UK in their early twenties.
Thanks again ... Heather

One more thing to add.
Pa has his hands on the shoulders of the youngest who is in front of him...looks like his youngest child and favourite, to me...
