Mitchell mystery
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 01:20 GMT (UK) »
Death cert for John Mitchell c1870 in Alva shows him as widower of Margaret Watson..occupation mason.
Death cert for Margaret Mitchell also c1870 shows her as married to John Mitchell ..occupation mason, she also died in Alva.

Problem is can find no marriage  ??? anywhere !!!

1851 census they are at Godle ??? assume Dollar, Clacks. According to this census there are the following children.
John 1834, Margaret 1839, James 1841 (born Culross ), William 1845, Elizabeth 1834, all born Tull ?? Clackmannanshire (that is the translation) have tried Tulliallan, Tullibody, Tillicoultry and have come up with nothing so am assuming they have been born elsewhere...the reason I have birthplace for James 1841 at Culross is because (purely by accident) he married a Cramb which is also my line and had already appeared in my An***** tree, Elizabeth c1834 married a John Donaldson and had a son Alexander in 1845 at Alva but can find no mariage or a birth for their son Alexander either.  Hope this makes sense..thought if I had the marriage of Margaret Watson and John Mitchell it may give me an indication of where all the children were born ..maybe... just listing Clackmannanshire give me heaps of Mitchell's..
Anyone have any idea's ...please..... ;D

Regards as always  Patvp

This has thrown me as well.. on the 1861 census Elizabeth Donaldson is with John Mitchell and Margaret..and is listed as ..stepdaughter..to John  ??? mother being Margaret..seem to be going around in circles here.  Patvp

Hi Pat  :)

Thought I would just post the census entries you are referring to as it makes it easier for people to see what the issues are:

1851:

John Mitchell 43, carpenter b. Godle, Clck.
Margaret Mitchell   49 b. Alva
John Mitchell 17, carpenter b. Tullibe, Clck.
Margaret Mitchell 12 b. Tullibe, Clck.
James Mitchell 10 b. Tullibe, Clck.
William Mitchell 6 b. Tullibe, Clck.
John Donaldson 22, lodger, woolspinner, b. Tillicoultry, Clck.
Elizabeth Donaldson 17, lodger, woolwinder, b. Tillicoultry, Clck.
John Fotheringham 28, ,lodger
William Fotheringham 20, lodger
Alexander Donaldson 6, grandson, b. Alva

Address: Head Of Green,  Alva Stirlingshire

1861:

John Mitchell 52, carpenter b. Tullibody, Clackmannanshire
Margaret Mitchell 60 b. Alva
Elizabeth Donaldson 26, stepdaughter b. Tullibody, Clackmannanshire
Alexander Donaldson 16, grandson b. Alva
David Eadie 23, boarder

Address: Head Of Green,  Alva Stirlingshire

Pat, a couple of things from this entry. Firstly, I can't think that the Alexander Donaldson, who shows as a grandson, belongs to Elizabeth given her age (10 at the time of his birth?) so he has to be from another Donaldson connection.

Also, you have death certs for John father which show him as a mason. The John above is a carpenter by trade, quite a different occupation  ???

Is it specifically a James Mitchell, son of a John Mitchell and Margaret Watson, that you are trying to trace because he married into one of your lines?

Have you seen this entry in 1851 - for a totally different family:

John Mitchell 37, mason, b. Dollar
Margt Watson 37 b. Kinr, Fassaway
Jas Watson 65, labourer b. Kinr, Fassaway
Jas Mitchell 9, son b. Saline

Address: Blackcraig, Logie Clackmannanshire

Hi Monica...Looks as tho'it may be back to the drawing board for me  ??? because I cannot find a marriage for Margaret Watson and John Mitchell cannot be too sure who their children may be...only have James as a certainty as he signed both death certs.  He married Janet Cramb in 1863 at Tillicoultry, Janet was the sister of Isabella Cramb who was my grandmother x3, Isabella married John Robertson who was the illegitimate son of Christian Mitchell and Christian was John Mitchell's sister... Parents - John Mitchell and Christian Rammage/Ramage.
As you can see they are inter - linked..and it is driving me mad.

Seems I am stuck on that one marriage Watson/Mitchell and whether or not there were other children other than James  ???

Hope you are well...we have wet weather again..the back end of the cyclone  ::) good excuse for being on the computer..maybe something will come out in the wash..Regards Pat

Hi - Found a possible 1861 census.

John Mitchell birth abt 1810 Born Dollar, Address Johnston St Alva, Occ Stone Mason.

Johnston St is on death cert for both.

Only one problem 1861 wife is listed as Mary ?? born Alloa 1810.

Other person on census is James Smith (lodger) born 1842 Ardoch Perth.

Can Mary/Margaret be the same
