Occupation: Leather...?
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 19:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone make out these three leather-related occupations?

Thanks!
Barrington, Westerman (originally from Hannover), Long (originally from Prussia), Lorymore, Flyng, Porter - all Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Grimes - Bridgwater, Somerset.
Lamb - Poplar, Essex, Hither Green, Kent.
Dwan, Turner, Cole, Carter, Walker, Kay, Hughes, Maplesden - all St Olaves/Bermondsey/Rotherhithe/Southwark/Stepney/Lambeth/Wandsworth.

The top one is "Leather Dresser" (with the double ss written in the old fashioned way) and the third one, I think, is "Finisher", not quite sure about the middle one - looks like F[ell]monger to me.

Edit:  Fellmonger it would seem to be, unlikely as this sounds! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fellmonger

Burnsides / Corps / Harker / HINDLE / Longstaff / Martin / Page (Co. Durham)

I agree with Ermie, leather dresser and finisher. I also read -----monger, are you sure they all had leather related occupations?

I had no idea that fellmongers dealt in animal skins. You learn something new everyday!

Yes, that would fit: a fellmonger being a dealer of hides and skins... says Wiki. ;)

(Elin, you really do learn something new everyday.)

Thanks ever so much, everyone!

I agree with Ermy. (and everyone else - I'm too slow) :D

One definition for fellmonger - quote from http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/f.html

1) Dealer in hides and skins , also recycled inedible animal parts for glue, fertiliser, offal, horn, bone, gut etc. Basically, he ran the "knacker's yard

I am sure that leather dresser is correct but at first sight I thought it was 'leather draper'
