licensed Victualler
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 15:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi
two of my ancestors are down on the 1851 census as being Licensed victualler Henry Flagg was at 7 New Compton road St Giles in the Field the other was Robert Flagg at 1 Duke Court St Martins in the Field another brother was a Potman with Henry.A Fourth brother was Benjamin but only have him down as licensed on his children's baptism records. They all came to London from Somerset.
They must have all liked a drink but is there any way finding out which pubs they where running?
many thanks
Ian :)

At that particular period of history many of the people who were recorded as licensed victuallers in the census were in fact running a beerhouse as a secondary occupation from their front room.  These beerhouses were frequently unnamed although some did emerge as named public houses later.

flaggysmob,
If the pubs still exist I'll see you there for a quick one!

Post Office Directory 1841 Pt 1
Henry Flagg, Flying Horse, Oxford St (from High St St Giles)

Post Office London Directory (Small Edition) 1852
Henry Flag, Greyhound P.H, 7 New Compton St, Soho
Robert Flagg, Queens Head P.H, Duke's Court, Bow St

If you google historical directories and search under Flagg (search by keyword) you'll see them listed. I've only checked pre 1850 and the 1850s. You may well find more in later decades.

Re Henry's first pub better the Flying Horse than the Flying Chair!

flaggsymob,
googled 'flying horse oxford st'. It was renamed The Tottenham and remains the only pub on Oxford St. Found a list of Landlords since 1840 but no mention of your Henry. Odd since they appear to have used historical directories as a source
