Annie Dowler, Hulme, late 19c
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 16:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I wondered if anybody could help me in trying to find a certain Annie Dowler who is recorded as the mother of my gggrandfather, James Thomas Hardy. He was born in 1896, and Annie Dowler and William Hardy are recorded as his parents. Also, they are recorded as his parents in St. Wilfrid's R.C. Parish records as a note on his marriage record in 1923 to Sarah Ross.

I have hit a brick wall with Annie Dowler, as I am unable to find a marriage record between her and William. There are a couple of Annie Dowler's on the census around the Chorlton registration district, but one appears to be potentially 10 years to old, and one 10 years or so too young!

James Thomas was born in 16 John Wood Street, Salford on 5 Sep 1896. If anybody could shed any light on Annie Dowler, I would be grateful!

Many thanks,
Karl

Does the birth entry show Annie as Annie Hardy nee Dowler or Annie nee Dowler

Or is she just shown as Annie Dowler?

It could be that Annie Dowler was a widow when she married William Hardy  ??? so you would not find a birth registration for her.

Also bear in mind that they may not have legally married,  :-\

Even though its says "formerly" on the certificate, this is not an indication  that a marriage actually took place.

More searching needed I fear

"Annie" may have been Ann or Hannah or even Mary Ann have you tried looking for any of those  ???.

There is this death but the area is wrong

Deaths December qtr 1900

Annie Dowler aged 31  Prestwich  8d 294

There is no Annie Dowler in that age range on the 1891 census and no marriage of a Dowler to an Annie between 1888-1900

There is no Annie Hardy death in the Chorlton area 1896-1901 that is young enough

Thanks everyone...the search will continue!

I think this is the family on the 1901 census...there don't appear to be any other obvious candidates..

I can't find a birth now for Helen Hardy! Aaargghh...even though it's frustrating, hopefully the search will yield results!

Rgds,
Karl
