Simcoe county lookup - Porter
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 21:47 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information (pre or post arrival in Ontario, Canada) on Oliver Porter (b. abt.1810 -15) recent accounts state that he was a settler who emigrated from Ireland, prior to the Irish famine (abt.1830?). Records show that he homesteaded in Simcoe County, West Gwillimbury Township on concession 6, Lot 10 (N1/2). Oliver’s spouse and the number of children they had are unknown. However, we know one son was Oliver B. Porter and suspect some of the other off-spring may have been named; Hubert, John (b. 1847) Mary Ann (b. 1844). These names came from Simcoe County census records but relationships are not confirmed. :'(

In 1861 census West Gwillimbury there is an Oliver Porter, widowed, b. 1786 Ireland age 75.
Listed separately in West Gwillimbury is Oliver POrter 21 b. Ontario labourer.

There is a marriage record 9 March 1859 at Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario between
John Porter b. 1829 Ireland s/o Oliver Porter and Elizabeth Porter and
Esther burns d/o John and Amelia Burns.

On the 1871 census they are living in Ottawa, Wellington Ward
John's birth is listed as 1819 b. Ireland age 52, engineer
wife Esther and children
Samuel(10), Ester Isabele(6), William(5), Sarah(3), and Matilda(1)

On the 1881 census John is shown as a civil engineer in Ottawa b. 1824 Ireland
Esther is 40 and children
Samuel(20), Isabella(16), William(14), Elizabeth(12), Matilda(11), John(9), Lidia(7), Louisa(5).

On the 1881, 1871 census for Ottawa, Wellington Ward is William Porter b. 1822 Ireland and his wife Sarah b. 1826 Ireland and daughter Jessie Fraser b. 1859 Ontario.  Occupation carpenter
On the 1861 census Wm Porter and wife Sarah in Ottawa
On the 1851 in Bytown East is William Porter 29, wife Sarah 27 and sister Jane Porter 31 - all born Ireland
William's death 23 Jan 1896 at 74 in Ottawa, Carleton shows him born Ireland, occupation builder

So far no marriage to link him to Oliver but the fact that a son of Oliver's settled in Ottawa might link William to the family.

Delilah Porter b. 1879 d/o Oliver B. Porter and Mary Gilchrist married William Sellers 31 Jan 1900 Simcoe.

You can find Oliver and his family living in Sunnidale Simcoe on various census.
I was assuming that this was the Oliver you were sure was a son of your Oliver.

The marriage record for Oliver Porter b. 1844 Canada and married to Mary Gilchrist in 1869 shows his parents as James and Delilah Porter and hers as Alexander and Sarah Gilchrist.

Here's a picture of Oliver Porter's headstone at the Christ Church Middleton Cemetery, it's hard to read the year he died and where he was from in Ireland, however I drive by the cemetery every day, I can stop on my way tommorrow and see if it's any clearer in person.

So far I haven't found James or Delila Porter on census but can find their names as parents on marriage records for the following in addition to Oliver Porter's marriage

Robert Porter, 25, b. 1850 Ont., resident of West Gwillimbury at time of marriage, s/o James Porter and Delila Fountaine to Sarah Jane Reid, 21 on 20 Oct 1875 at Barrie, Ontario.

Lewis Porter, 25, b. 1842 Ont, s/o James Porter and Delilah Fortey to Effie McLean, 23 29 Jan 1867 Ontario County, Ontario

William Porter, b. 1856 Ont., living Walkerton at time of marriage, s/o James and Delilah Porter to Elizabeth Riley 25 May 1881 Hanover, Grey County.

1881 census for Louis Porter and wife Effie.
They are on the 2nd page and on the first page are families of Fountain - one named Delilah.  Most likely a recurring family name.
