Where is the best place to hunt down an elusive relative?
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 21:54 GMT (UK) »
Have never been on this site before,So hope you can help me out here.
Have hit a wall, looking for my husbands gt grandfathers birth( George White), I have Royal Navy Records that state his birth as 24th July 1873, Miletown, Sheerness, Kent, but have been unable to track down the original birth records. He married Elizabeth Jane Brown (b1876 Sheerness) on 29th April 1899. I have the marriage cert, this confirms his age, and his fathers name is also George White. No middle names are given for either Georges, I have him on the 1901 and 1911 census, and the age is still the same.
Any suggestions on where I can look to find him?
White - Sheerness,Gillingham,Kent
Richardson - Hawick, Rox
Lunn - Durham, Lincoln
Wilson - Lincoln
Smith - Lincoln

Welcome to Rootschat.

Have you tried Parish Records? As you know when and where he was born this may be an option.

Hi, Thank you for replying.
Have never sussed out how to access Parish Records Yet, Novice here at all this. Can Parish records be accessed on line? or would it be a case of a trip to the library? Tried to get birth cert with info given, but it couldnt be found at records!

Had to check for registration district for Sheerness - I see it's Sheppey.

Nearest one is for George Edward White, Sheppey, 2a, 787, Sep qtr 1872, but this is a full year too early.

I had problems finding my grandfather's birth reg at one time. the last 2 letters of his surname were missing from the registration - it took me a while to find him. Your George may have been mis-transcribed or the entry illegible.

I still think Parish Reisters are the best bet. Is this an option for you? You could always request a lookup on the Kent lookups board.
Good luck

Hi
I keep coming up with the same George Edward White, but the dates like you say are a year too early. There is also a George Sennock White born in Sheerness in 1875, two years too late! How ever, I have learnt never to disregard everything I find.
I will try the Parish Records route, once I have located where to look at it, and thanks for the tip about the lookup in Kent. I didn't know we could do that on here.

Thanks for your help :)

I would suggest that you start a new topic on the Kent board. Try to include the important info on the heading

eg Birth records for George White b1876 Sheerness

You should get a reply from Kent experts who will know the best place to go to access the Kent Records. If it's too far for you to visit, it's worth requesting a lookup.

There are lots of really helpful people here. I have been helped many times when I have been completely stuck!

Colin Penney's site is very useful for Sheppey.  It includes burial information for Halfway Cemetery, and this entry looks as though it might be your chap:

WHITE GEORGE   58   25 VINCENT GAR(DENS)   10/11/1931

UK census content is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk  Transcriptions are my own.

Hi thank you for responding to my query. My computer will not open your link to Colin Penny's site, does he have another link?
Certainly sounds the most promising hit so far. I would love to check it out and verify him, as I have had so many false leads. Why do families insist on using the same name over and over and over again!!!!!!!!!
I suppose they thought it would make it more fun to sort them out later in life!!
Thank you for you help and time.
