18 Wood road (again)
« on: Monday 22 March 10 20:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Through this forum some one sent me a link for a picture of Wood Road Smethwick from the 1960s.
I can not find where it was as it doesnt seem to exist anymore, could anyone please help and tell me roughly were it could be. My mum was born there here grandma and grandad lived there in the 1911 census he was a Richard Fancote and worked at Chances glass works.
Thanks for any help
Susan

Hi Susan,

I'm not 100% sure but on the 1901 census it says Oldbury rd South side from holly lane to boundary, nine leasowes, church st, wood road, south of the G.W. line (great western)
i think this is the area it would have been
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
and type this
9 Leasowes, Smethwick, West Midlands B66 1JA, United Kingdom
you could ask sandwell archives they hold the maps for the area

Just to (sort of!) confirm, Wood Road was one of the 'back to backs' of West Smethwick in he jumble of streets that included George Street, Hawthorn Street, Corser Street and the like.  My nan grew up there and she remembers it.
Neale, Stapleton, Lowe, Rusgrove, Mann.

Hi
My mum was born there in 1925, Do you know when they where knocked down?
I think they moved to Walsall in the 1930s. but most of the extended family stayed in the area, mums name was Cotterill, her mum was named Fancote

Hello - this would seem to suggest that Hawthorn Street (and therefore Wood Road and the like) were around until the mid 60's, but I've a feeling that they all went long before that.  I'll check with my nan and let you know...

I've known one or two Cotterills, but no Fancotes I'm afraid.  My folks round that way were Manns and Fletchers and Lewises
