Bell family in Scotland.
« on: Tuesday 23 March 10 13:52 GMT (UK) »

I am looking for the Bell family in Scotland. They were originally from Tyrone Ireland. They are Alexander Bell, Mary, William, Alexander born 1858, Margaret Bell.

They could be in the 1861 or 1871 census. They were farmers and later left to settle in County Durham. I am reading this from a newspaper cutting.

Please can anyone help. I have  no luck at all with my irish roots ::)

Many Thanks

Was Alexander born in Ireland 1858?

When did they arrive in Durham?

Hi

I,m not sure, the newspaper cutting says, he was a Hewer in the mines from 12. So that would be 1870/1. There is no mention of any other children other than William, Alexander and Margaret born to Alexander and Mary Nee Mckinney.  They went from Tyrone to Scotland then to Durham where they stayed. Alexander joined the 2nd Queens brigade when he was 18 stayed for 2 years and bought himself out then returned to the mines.

I cant seem to find them.
Thanks for looking

One possibility is the following family.
1881 census: Sherburn Mill, Sherburn, Durham;
Bell family; all born Ireland:
Alexander, 46, Coal Miner;
Mary A, 44, wife;
William J, son, unm, 22, Coal Miner;
Henry, son unm, 14, cop. Society Check Boy [clerk];
Margaret, daur, 12, Dress Maker Appren;
John, son, 10, Scholar;
Maria J, daur, 8, Scholar;
Haven't had much luck with Alexander as there are several possibilities and I am not at all sure the following is the family you are looking for.
1891 living at 36 Kirkpatrick St, Glasgow, Camlachie
Alexander Bell, 41, Steel Smelter, born Co Tyrone, Ireland
Maggie, wife, 29, born Alloa, Clackmannan
Alexander, son, 1, born Glasgow.
In 1901 the family above were living 112 Westmuir Street, Glasgow Parkhead but the father wasn't with them. Maggie, 26, occupation was 'Keeps Boarders'; Alexander, 11, Scholar.
Other children were Maggie 7, Thomas 2
In 1901 there is one mentioned as being born Ireland. He was 40, married but living as a Boarder and working as a Coal Hewer in Bedlington, Northumberland.

Thanks so much for the information. That family always comes up. I dont think they are my family.

Alexander(1858) I can trace from his youth, and he lived until about 6 weeks off his 102nd birthday. He died Friday Nov 27th 1959.

There has never been a mention of any other siblings other than William, and Maggie.

William and Alexander married the Braithwaite sisters. Annie and Mary. I cant find their parents. It was only recently I found out the family came here. On both of the boys marriage certs it says father deceased. 1883 Alexander & 1885 William.
The options are 1861, 1871 or 1881(Maybe) Somebody's granny now deceased talked of Mary Mckinney(Bell) going to scotland for Williams funeral. They said he 'trod the roads'. I have never heard mention of a family for him.
Maggie died a spinster in the 1950's she died in Durham.
I hope one day to find the puzzle pieces.. ::)
Best Regards
Bernie

 I have done very extensively family research work on both Bell Families of Dumfries County, and also on Arkimholme near Langhorn Scotland  as well as in Northern Ireland. dating back to the 15th Century right up to the 17th Century. Also this family is family connected to Alexander Graham Bell and his family. Here are some of my findings--Archibald Bell --Born 1594, Arkimholme ,near Langhorn,Scotland Died, 1688, Armagh ,Armagh County, Northern Ireland,.His marriage took place in 1618 to Ann Yuruns-Born, 1595,Died, 1625
My Great-Grandmother's Grandfather, William Bell-Born on August 12, 1758, Moygashel, Tyrone County,Northern Ireland ,Died on March 28th, 1833, of the First Concession of Thurlow Township, East of Belleville, Ontario, Hastings County, Canada. If you wish to contact me ,please do so at this-

Where did you source the birth information for Archibald 1594?
