Llewellin/Llewellyn Look Up
« on: Tuesday 23 March 10 16:36 GMT (UK) »
I'm totally new to looking up information concerning my welsh ancestory ant totally unaware if there is any differece with the other ones.. so I apologise for my lack of knowledge.

I am trying to trace the family of a distant grandparents parents and siblings.

I am looking for a lady called Ann Llewellyn born circa 1833 in Abystree, Robeston Wathen, Pembrokeshire, her parents were Isaac Llewellin born circa 1801 also from Robeston Wathen and Sarah Hughes born circa 1795 in Amroth, Pembrokeshire.

I don't know how far back Welsh history can be traced back, but in case it can be traced back further; Sarah's parents were John Hugh and Anne Llewellin (no further info about them) and Isaac's father was named William Llwellyn (no info about him either).

I have heard reference by my family that there is a connection with Narbeth, but I am sure where or how.  I am aware however that by 1871 Anne had left Wales, but I am unsure when or if any siblings or parents followed suit.

I hope someone can help.

Regards and thanks for any future help.

Liz

I can confirm that Ann was baptised at Robeston 11 Aug 1833 as per the IGI to Isaac and Sarah Llewellyn.

Isaac Llewellin of Robeston Wathen married Sarah Hugh at Llawhaden 23 Oct 1823.
Siblings to Ann may well be
William baptised 21 Nov 1830 at Robeston Wathen to Isaac and Sarah Llewellyn as per IGI
Elizabeth baptised 26 Jun 1836 at Robeston Wathen to Isaac and Sarah Llewellyn as per IGI.

To understand Pembrokeshire parish registers can I refer you to ;

In the majority of cases P.R.'s start circa 1740's but in some cases can go back to the civil war. We are not like the English who think nothing of search the mid 1500's, or in my case back to 1534.

John Hughes mrd Anne Llewellin at Amroth in 1786 and a William Llewellin married Elizabeth Parsell at Amroth in 1778.

To assist your earlier pre 1800 research a look at free Welsh wills at

Thank you so much,

I've managed to track one of my families back to a marriage in 1584, but that was because they all stayed in the same village for many generations, so it was easy.. besides the church they all were married or baptised in, has a webpage.

But I agree somethings English are just impossible.... I must have my determination to seek things out from my welsh blood, which I am very proud of.

Thank you for the links.  I'll look at it now and also save it for future reference.

Again thank you and regards,

Liz

Hi Liz

I cant help you but would like to make a couple of suggestions.
If you get stuck ,get Pembroke Record Office to do searches for you.

I have always been very pleased with them.

If you live in the UK & can get to Pembrokeshire,go Grave Hunting.
I have been amazed by info i have found on the Headstones.

On my Gibby line,at New Moat i found my 3xGreatgrandparents,James & Mary.
Underneath Mary`s name was the daughter of Rev David Griffith of LLanglywen.
I was so excited.I now have his Ordination Papers,Marriage & loads more.

Good Luck in research.

Hiya,

fortunately I am still relatively still young and have years ahead of me to do research on my family... plus doing my husband's family too.  I like in the Uk fortunately, but transport is an issue at present, as I have none.. I don't even get on holidays... and there are tons of places I want to go to, just for the family history side alone.  I'll try to encourage my parents to do a grave yard search though, as they have the occasional holiday to Wiseman's Bridge every couple of years or so.  I'm sure my dad has said he found a shop that Ann junior had worked in once, but he never has really told me details about it though.

Yes it is a shame are Llewellyn details don't seem to match up.. though you never know, they may do one day... Lol.

I used to live in Aberystwyth for a brief time and I am sure I read there was a Llewellyn there to do with the castle.. but I can't remember much about it at the moment.

Anyway, thank you for the tips; I hope I will get the chance to go on grave yard searches myself one day soon... a car is missed at these times, even just for day trips.

Regards,

Liz

Don't go spending when it ain't required, let me know what you want and will add to my own 'to do' list for my weekly visit to the Rec Off, I have over 40 years experience, so can source or research most things.
As to grave hunting, I am forever in church & chapel yards and cemeteries around the whole county doing research for my talks on Pembrokeshire Military Headstones 1700 to 2006. In fact there are only a few places left for me to visit.
If you wish to do the research yourself, but just want some pointers to spend time wisely whilst in the county, just ask.

Thank you so much for your very kind offer Orielbenfro,

I'd be very happy to accept your offer if you are able.

As I think I said before, this is all the information that I know at present, plus the information you sent me before; which was very useful.

I tried looking at the websites that you suggested, but I found them a bit confusing (must be me), but I plan to go back to them soon and take another look.

It would have been nice to have graveyards in my own town to visit, in searching for mine and my husbands family.. but mine are in other counties and so is my husbands.. though he does have one relative's grave I could visit here.  Which I think I will have to do, to check the information his mother gave me.  But other than that, the whole family is buried else where and we are the result of families moving around the country or even out of countries as the case shows.

I am interested in anything family connected, even the off shoots, though I am presuming the name LLewellyn and Hughes are quite popular names, so I hope they all stayed in the same county to make searching easier.  But from the research I have found, most people tended to stay in the same locality until the past 100+ years.

Again thank you, if you have any questions you need answering I shall try to help, though I doubt I will be able to; as I don't have much knowledge about this line in my family.. but I shall try to endeavour if possible.

Much regards and thanks,

Liz

Hi

Not sure if you still use this chat as its been so long, but i have been doing my family tree and i believe my great grandmother Sarah Llewellyn who was from Abystree in Robeston Wathen, is a sister to Ann Llewellyn. Their parents were Isaac Llewellyn born 1802 and Sarah Hughes born 1798 who I believe had 8 children.  My great grandmother Sarah Llewellyn married Rhys Wyn Jones in 1871 at Llawhaden where he taught. Isaacs parents were William and Martha. When he retired from teaching they moved to Gate House in Narberth.

If you are still researching your family tree perhaps we could chat further.
