Anthony & Emma Ashton BC Look up
« on: Wednesday 24 March 10 03:42 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information regarding the death of Anthony Ashton who I believed died in Vancouver around 2 Feb 1918.   His wife Emma came to NZ when her daughter Emily died leaving a young family in 1910.   Am wondering why they were in Canada to start with as they had been on a visit to the UK from NZ (I think they were both born in UK,  am currently waiting on printouts  to find this out) and their children were all born in NZ , this I have yet to prove.   Maybe someone would be kind enough to look up census or such to see when they were both together in Canada and who they would have been staying with at the time.    Thanks Marj

There is an Anthony and Emma Ashton in Vancouver on the 1911 census. Here's a link to the census transcription with the split screen to include the image as well:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=62884
The census indicates they came to Canada in 1905.

There are people here who do BC look-ups if you don't have a copy of Anthony's death registration. The Anthony Ashton who died on the date you have is listed as having died in New Westminster and was 80 years old.

I tried to find a passenger list for Anthony and Emma but so far no luck.

You're fast Debbie.

It looks like a daughter named Maud was with them when they arrived. A possible marriage for Maude Ashton in Vancouver to Arthur Richard Pegg on 22 Jun 1908. Perhaps someone can look that one up for you as well.

Here's a 1911 census entry for Arthur and Maud Pegg and family in Vancouver:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=62884
The census indicates Maude was born in New Zealand. It also indicates she immigrated in 1905 which matches with the passenger list.

The passenger list indicates that all three were born in Stafford England.
There is an
Anthony Ashton (b. 1838 Kingswinford Staffordshire) s/o Anthony Ashton (b. Kingswinford) and Rose Hannah (b. Dudley Worcester) along with other siblings on the 1861 British census in Kingswinford.

Don't see him in the 1871.  The elder Anthony Ashton and wife Roseannah are in Kingswinford on the 1871 and 1881.

IGI references a christening for Anthony Ashton 27 Aug 1837 Kingswinford and St. mary's Chapelry Stafford and a marriage between Anthony Ashton and Rosannah Garbett 21 July 1834 Saint Thomas Dudley Worcester.

On FreeBMD there is a birth registered for Edith Maude Ashton Dec 1878 Dudley 6c 107
modified to add:  in 1901 she appears with parents Richard and Hannah

Wow you people are amazing.   Thankyou so much for all this information.   I do have the birth of Maud Francis and then no more records for her.  Another piece of the puzzle solved.    Will digest all  this a little later.  Cheers and thanks again, Marj

The wonderful RootsChatters in BC who do look-ups will likely see this thread anyway but if you were to go to your initial post of this thread and modify the subject to add the words "BC look-up" they might spot it faster and be able to get copies of the marriage and death registrations I referred to. The births of Maud's two sons listed on the census will be protected by privacy laws as will their marriages if they remained in BC. I didn't see their deaths listed in the index but it only goes to 1979.
