Matilda Filby Crowder married Charles George Smith
Sept qtr 1883 in Croydon registration district.

Unfortunately wills are not shown on line after 1941, he might have just missed the date, on line usually only show who probate was granted to I think

As I said I am interested in the Crowder Spilman connection, it was just by chance another Rootschatter gave me more inform mation

Enjoy your break

Hi Faith,
I don't know if you have been to this site www.genealogyworld.net  but it is quite informative and a lady called Rosemary will do look ups for the Sugar Industry if you e-mail her * I see your Sir Charles is listed amongst the names.  May be worth a try.
Good luck
Sue

Hi,

can someone tell me where I can get more info on my g/grandfather 'William Pearce [founder] of Illovo'
I have been told he was the main instigator for the railway line down the south coast and possibly the Indian community in Durban - is this correct?

thanks

If you go back to earlier posts on this thread you'll find one from me which mentions Pearce - in connection with C G Smith. Source was the book Renishaw by Hocking.
Another source is Valiant Harvest. I could send you images of two pages on Pearce but not sure if I can do that via Rootsweb - i.e. from a published source as attachments.
Otherwise send me your email address.
I don't think Pearce could be described as the 'instigator' of the south coast railway - but the development of the railway is a huge topic - nor of the Indian community - the latter being brought in to Natal by government from 1860 and another vast topic.

Hi,

Thanks, that at least clears some stuff up for me, would you say Pearce was more of the entrepreneural type and smith was more business savvy, that's what it seems like to me...

Thanks!

Hi - I have been browsing William Pearce of Illovo Sugar.
He was my late mother's grandfather!
Of course I am wondering who you are and the connection?!

hi can you let me know your parents names as my grandfather is Bertrand Pearce, and mom Elizabeth Sue Pearce(known as Sue and born when Bert was around 60), my wife has my full family tree (with help from my Pearce cousin in France and I'm currently in England but born and bred KZN)

thanks! Dean
