Help with 1871 census.
« on: Thursday 25 March 10 21:30 GMT (UK) »
First post so try and be gentle with me! i have been putting together bits and pieces of my family history on and off for the last year.when i hit a brick wall with finding family members i tend take a break from looking.and search again a few months later,so i can have fresh mind.most people know how frustrating it can be!!

I am trying to find a Henry Clark and Joan Clark in the 1871 census.John was born in Glasgow in 1850,and Joan was born in Paisley in 1851.Her maiden name was Henderson. They married in Glasgow in 1870.Both seem not to be on the 1871 census, from what i have searched.

I can find a daughter been born to them in 1872 Hannah, they have more children in the years to follow.i can them pick them up in the 1881 census living in Glasgow.Joan is them found in the 1891 census without Henry in the house.she is living with her children.

Henry dies in 1898,and Joan dies in 1905.Henry really puzzles me,because he is missing from two censuses.

has he something to hide!!

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat, it's always friendly.

Do you have Joan and Henry on the 1861 census? Just in case they are with their parents or something on Census night?

Have you had a look on the IGI?

Hannah's birth is listed there in Glasgow's central district on 19 Jan 1872.

There is also an entry for a Joan and an Elizabeth born Glasgow Central District on 2 Jul 1870.

I had a quick look on SP and found a death for Joan on July 6th 1870, parents Henry Clark and Joan m/s Henderson. The cause of death was prematurity.

There is also a death entry in 1870 for Elizabeth (it's listed on IGI as Elisabeth, but the death is Elizabeth).

Thanks for the great information.

Henry and Joan married in May 1870,i never even knew that they had two children before Hannah.I use Scotlands people and Ancestry for my searching.I
have never had much luck searching on IGI.I must be doing something wrong!!

I have both of them with parents on the 1861 census.they are not with Henrys parents on the 1871 census.Going by the marriage entry on 1870 both Joans parents are dead.

Thanks again.

I have just re-read the posts, and did not realise it was twins,i have a huge lump in my throat.because i also have twins girls.

I got the records from Scotlands people,Joan died only after 4 days.and Elizabeth after 10 days.

Thanks again for the help.

With them both being missing I'm wondering if this isn't going to be a case of "interesting" spellings somewhere.

Hello Julz

Welcome to rootschat. I have often been helped on here when I have been really stuck, so I hope you will be lucky too.

I have tried a variety of spellings without success I'm afraid. I found the same census records as you, but not the 1871 or Henry in 1891. I'm sure they will be there somewhere, but some names are SO difficult to read and often horribly mis-transcribed.

I also used Ancestry. I don't have a subscription to FindMyPast. perhaps someone will be able to find them for you there.

Good luck
Angela

The only other thing i can find is a Henry Clark in the 1871,is in the Ciencester union workhouse in Gloucestershire.

It shows him born in Glasgow in 1851,one year out from him being born in Glasgow. Also lists him as a Vagrant.still no sign of Joan Clark.

After the deaths of the twins, they seen to disappear, and seem to come back to Glasgow for the birth of Hannah in 1872.

I wonder if they maybe moved abroad, then when Joan fell pregnant with Hannah they moved back to Glasgow.

I had spotted the Cirencester Workhouse entry too, but there wasn't a link to show that it might be him so I ignored it.

Unfortunately some people don't seem to want us to find them. I often wish they had included more detail - perhaps a middle name if they had one.

What a shame that your first post hasn't been successful (so far!)

There are some really helpful people on rootschat. If I get stuck I always post here and my queries usually get sorted. Perhaps there's another query you could post for everyone.

Regards
Angela
