Nope, & the ones who seem to be right ages don't fit...

Perhaps your date of entry was incorrect, or the home child went back to England and married /returned....
He may also have had another surname & been adopted into a Holmes family...

Your best bet is follow jacquie's advice...as this is an immediate family member and worth it to know...

I don't know, others here will tell better than me, but maybe you could ask for a copy of the 1940 National Registration form (from Statistics Canada) that perhaps was signed by your grand-dad. It required some info on the parents....

Bradley (Liverpool, Toxteth Park / Co. Sligo, Co. Tyrone); Wheler/Wheeler  (Poole, Liverpool); Ganly (Co. Roscommon / Edinburgh); Kilculllen (Co. Sligo); Lush (Dorset); Dignan (Co. Sligo); Hoare (Co. Roscommon)

The 1940 National Registration didn't ask for the names of a person's parents - just where they were born. Plus it's almost as expensive ($45 + $2.25 GST) to buy as a birth registration ($50) from Saskatchewan. Here's a link to what the form looked like:

jacquie's suggestion still the best idea... I noted you are in Sask. so it would be pretty easy to get.
However, Once you do have the information we could help you get started in the trace back to England.

We can look for some who may home children on the censuses...but if he just moved to the area around your grandfather's birth it won't really help unless you have another clue to help tie in the information anyway...
Here's a Frederick as Holms in Manitoba 1901...http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=64014&highlight=47    looks to be a crossed out 1890 year of immigration

a Willie Holmes imm.1898

Hi All,

Thank again for the helpful information and where to start. What I landed up doing was going back to a 1939 newspaper here that had the wedding of my grandfather and grandmother with a picture and a write up about where the wedding took place and bridesmaids etc, low and behold it named the parents( my great grandparents ), from there the tree went back to them coming to Canada from England, found their entry and siblings that were born in England and have gotten back as far as the late 1600's on both sides now.  :) :) :) ps: no truth to the rumour his father was a home child
