Dyton family- India to Gt Britain and the US
« on: Sunday 28 March 10 10:08 BST (UK) »
Hi people
I am doing research into my nan's side of the family. My nan Maureen Elizabeth Dyton lived in Agra India during world war 2 married to John Grant Payne. She returned to Nottingham England about 1947-8. My nan appears to have had 3 step brothers, William, Frank and Albert Dyton. Frank and William stayed in India and owned a hotel. From what my aunty knew is that William and Frank may have returned to the UK about 1967 and Albert went to the USA, Im told Albert went to the US as a child as it was common for children to be taken in by another family..for money? My nan was born in 1924 and they were her older brothers, I can't seem to find anything about Frank and William Dyton in the UK, but not sure I have the resources to find anything about a Albert Dyton going to live in the US. I know the Dyton family lived in India for years before hand and have been directed to one record  by a helpful chap relating to a Dyton marriage who I can confirm is my nan's father's first marriage from which Albert Dyton was born,
http://www.search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_detail.php?id=387522
but Frank and William who were my nan's full brothers were from a later marriage to Catherine Elizabeth Dyton, she was 67 in 1949 when she sailed back from Bombay to Nottingham to look after my nan.

I also know that Frank and William Dyton were christened in St Patricks Church Agra.

I know this sounds like a bit of a mess but I had to get all the info I know down as it was coming into my head before I start getting mixed up :)
Any help would be gratefully received

Very curious is this.

Albert Edward Dyton appears on the passenger list of the SS Homestead which arrived in New York from Bombay on 14 August 1926 (having left Bombay on June 30). He is 24 and a caterer. He'd been living in Lucknow, and his nearest relative in India is his brother William Dyton of the Bowen Manse in Bombay.

Albert Dyton aged 24 also appears on the crew manifest of that vessel as a mess boy.

He'd also been a mess boy on the Algie arr NY from Calcutta in January 1926

With the Algie's manifest for that January 1926 voyage there is a notice from the US Dept of Labor requiring Albert Dyton to be detained on board: "not a bona fide member of crew" "intends to abandon calling"

Naturalisation record index shows an Albert Edward Dyton 1927 Westchester Co., N.Y. (scroll down page):

Also a possible 1968 death for this man in S.S.D.I. (www.familysearch.gov.uk)

First post is rather confusing-
My nan appears to have had 3 step brothers, William, Frank and Albert Dyton.

and then-
... but Frank and William who were my nan's full brothers were from a later marriage to Catherine Elizabeth Dyton...

sorry! it was a case of me writing down the information quickly. Albert was my nan's step brother from her fathers first marriage. Frank and William and Maureen Elizabeth Dyton were from the second marriage.
Sorry!

Yonkers is in Westchester Co., N.Y. so that might fit with 1927 naturalization record.
