WWI medal - Army I think
« on: Monday 29 March 10 14:18 BST (UK) »
I had a GGG Grandmother called Harriet Seward.   She was a member of the Seward Steam Engine family in Petersfield, Hampshire (I think the company started after her).    I was intrigued when looking at another well-known genealogy site today (GR) under the name Seward to see that someone has a medal in their possession for an S Seward and is looking for a home for it.

I cannot possibly claim it because I descended on the female side and I don't know of the person anyway.

He was:  S Seward - it is a WWI medal and is engraved T2SR-01915 WO Cl.1 - this, I believe, is a Warrant Officers medal.

What is T2SR?    Is it possible for some kind person to look up this chaps MIC - I would be most humbly grateful.   I am curious.

Hello Sue,

T2SR is an Army Service Corps prefix, but so far I haven't had any luck tracking down a MIC.

There are 10 hits for S Seward on the NA site:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=10&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1

None appear to be a warrant officer, so he may be listed under his full name.

[Modified] for some reason I can't post the complete link - so you will have to go to the search page and type in his name yourself - and while I was doing that I see he has been found - oh well....

His name was Sergeant (Acting WO Class 1) Samuel Seward of the Army Service Corps. His medal index card – either on Ancestry or on the NA medal card website – has his number as T2/SR 01915. T2 means Horse Transport section.in the 2nd New Army.  The low number 01915 indicates an early joining date. But if you get no joy here I suggest you find an ASC expert on the Great War Forum,

Steward served in Egypt. He was also awarded the Silver War Badge for being discharged early - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp

Phil... the NA site has it as T2/SR

Thanks Ken.

Logic would imply that SR = Special Reserve ..... but then logic isn't always right.

Hi Phil

I wondered about that. There are men with numbers starting T1/SR but not T3/SR or T4/SR. Maybe all the SRs were used up in the first two waves?

Thank you all so much for what you discovered.

Does the MIC by any chance say he came from Petersfield or Buriton, Hampshire.

Hi Sue,
I am looking at a record, but the number given is T2SR 01905, rather than 01915.  The name etc corresponds.  The address given for this Samuel Seward (01905) is 25 Edith Rd, Stratford, London.

Many thanks for that Mosher.    He is clearly not one of my Sewards sadly.
