Walter Berridge - Brick wall
« on: Monday 29 March 10 14:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to break down some of my brick walls.

My GGuncle Walter Berridge was born Feb 1848 in Long Eaton. His parents Eleanor Berridge and John Beswick married the following year and lived in Sutton Bonnington.

I have them as a family in the 1851 and 61 censuses with Walter now being known as Walter Berridge Beswick. I then lose him completely - no death, marriage or emigration that I can find.

He could be using Berridge or Beswick as his surname.

Anyone got any ideas?

Rog

Hi Rog,

I was going to suggest that maybe in went into the military. :-\

I have no idea what age you would have been to participate in WW1 but there is a record of a Walter Beswick b Nottingham, K.I.A in Flanders 7.7. 1916...... Residence Nottingham.

Rank Private, 15971 Northumberland Fusiliers, 11th Batt.
Theatre of War Aldershot.

Thanks Patrish,

I thought that military or navy may be an option but don't know where to look.

I discounted WW1 as he would have been in his 60s.

Pre WW1 records are held at the National Archives Kew, they do have some records online, worth a look at

Thanks for your help.

Finally found him in 1871 in Quebec as a soldier.

Good trail from then on. He married, returned to England where he had 2 children, but was missing from the records as he was posted to Ireland.

After 22 years in the army he finally emigrated to Canada.

Moral.

Never give up = more records become available every year so persist.
