Please help to identify regiment
« on: Tuesday 30 March 10 01:15 BST (UK) »
Please could anyone help me to find out what regiment my grandfather served in. He died when my mother was only 12 and there is only 1 surviving photo of him. It shows him in uniform at what looks line some sort of barracks.
If it helps he was born in Bury, Lancashire where he lived all his life as far as we know. His parents were and older sister were from Ireland (not sure what part).
My mother has mentioned many times she would love to know more about him and the background from this photo. I have tried to look up the cap badges previously without any success so any help anyone can give would be extreemely helpful.
Dawn

9th,10th,11th,15th Service Battalions were all based in Salisbury Plain, Hampshire which would tie in with a photographer from Whitchurch visiting to take photos.

You'd have thought he would've been Lancs Fusiliers in Bury, but thats the draft for you.

Thank you so much Pete... That is amazing, we have never been able to pin down anything about this at all.
Can I ask was it a unusual to be in a regiment that didn't have any links to where you were from? Would he have been drafted for WW1? Or would it have been something like national service (he was born 1889 and we know he didn't serve during WW2 and died 1948 after a long illness.
I can't thank you enough for your help with this one.
