Pope in Hughesovska - now Donetsk
« on: Tuesday 22 March 05 21:39 GMT (UK) »
We're trying to find an elusive Cossack.

Legend has it that a Victorian member of the Pope family from Pill in Newport settled in Poland, Russia or the Ukraine and fathered "Cossacks".

Legend has proved remarkably good thus far, and we think this may be linked fto the steel industry which was imported to Hughesovska (now Donetsk).

Whilst this is largely represented as a Merthyr undertaking in all that I've read, I've seen at least one returned chap buried in St Woolos Newport.

Now, does anyone have a list of names, or suggest where they might be held on line, or anything else about where to start, before we mount a raid on the County Record Office at Cwmbran.

Any thoughts gratefully received.
