Advice please re. Canadian Marriages
« on: Tuesday 30 March 10 22:27 BST (UK) »
Could someone please tell me whether an 1850 Canadian marriage  certificate would show the Bride and Groom's fathers' names.

I have found a marriage on A......y but there are no fathers mentioned so I though getting a copy of the original certificate might help.

Also, if I needed an original marriage certificate where would I apply (I live in England)

Thank you
Lyn

If you provide the bride and grooms names, town and province and date, someone may be able to help you.

There isn't a central registry in Canada for BMD's, it is by province and the regulations and documents vary.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

The marriage was 20 June 1850 Bathurst, Ontario between William Chapman and Jane Pool.

William was resident in Matilda and Jane in Beckwith

Thank you
Lyn

Statutory registration for marriages in Ontario didn't begin until 1869 so there is no certificate available. I viewed the image that was with the record you referred to and it appears to be a parish record but, as you said, there are no names of parents listed.

I went to a site that has a lot of information but can be quite confusing. It is called Grannies Genealogy Garden

http://granniesgenealogygarden.com/

As Jacquie said there won't be a certificate but I went to the above site and found some early census info for Beckwith Township, Lanark County. It won't definitely give you Jane's parents but is probably as close as you may get.

1851 Census Beckwith Township, Lanark County as of 12 January 1852

Poole, James, b. Ireland, Methodist, age 26, Con. 12 Lot 14P, Printer
Elizabeth M. Ontario, Methodist, age 22
William, Ontario, Methodist, age 3
Martha, Ontario, Methodist, age 1

Poole, Adam, b. Ireland, Methodist, age 31, Con 4 Lot 26, Farmer
Jane, Ontario, Methodist, age 26  (nee Wiggins)
Malachie (male), Ontario, Methodist, age 6
Ann Eliza, Ontario, Methodist, age 4
Abner, Ontario, Methodist, age 2

There were quite a few pages to go through

Poole, John, Ontario, Methodist, age 29, Con 4 Lot 24, Teacher
Ellen, Ontario, Methodist, age 26 (nee Bellamy)

Poole, John, Ireland, Methodist, age 62, Con 4, Lot 24, Farmer
Mary, Ireland, Methodist, age 50 (nee Alcock)
James, Ontario, Methodist, age 22, labourer
Marsellia, Ontario, Methodist, age 16
Thomas, Ontario, Methodist, age 13
Samuel, Ontario, Methodist, age 11

1842 Census Beckwith Township, Head of Household

John Poole, b. 1823, Con 4 Lot 24, Total in Household 1

John Poole, Con 4 Lot 24, Total in Household 9

William Poole, b. 1832, Con 12 Lot 14, Total in Household 7

I haven't found anything on William Chapman and Jane Pool but the above are probably her family if she was from Beckwith.

She made a great little site there, long before other information was put online. She's no longer with us. Nice of her to share what she'd  found while doing her own family searches....
Further to valerie's find: Speculation on this family having been mistranscribed as Toole prior to leaving, back in Ireland... Might be worth checking out....

Thank you all so much for the information, it's very much appreciated and I shall have a look at it.  I know from William's records that he should be around Shannonville or Farmersville in 1851 but so far haven't found him so will just have to keep looking.

There are 2 possible William Chapman's on the 1871 census in the areas that you mentioned above. It is an idex only so only head of family are included. I always look for a starting point and work backwards so depending on what info you already have, you may be interested in having a look.

Hastings East
Leeds and Grenville North

If you can find some local genealogy centers you sometimes get more information as they have books and data that has been collected by locals. Examples: Moss Diaries in Springhill - old Mr. Moss kept a list of everyone who died in Springhill, NS from the early 1900's: Colchester has a book by Thomas Millar that lists all the settlers and descendants from the late 1700's and early 1800's. Local societies and museums often have information that isn't available through the more prominent sites. I am sure that if you look on-line you will find some for Lanark, Leeds and Hastings in the Ottawa area.
