John Evans Green
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 16:41 BST (UK) »
Hello fellow researchers,

John Evans Green married in Enniskillen Northern Ireland 1911, he was a resident in the local military barracks at the time in Queen Street His father was listed as William Soldier on his marriage cert. John was listed as a Seargent in the Royal Army Medical Corps. On his daughter's birth certificate in Enniskillen 1915 he is listed as in action in France, I have found his WW1 war medal it gives the reference number 12261.

I have checked the 1911 census for the barracks, it only gives initials, some very hard to read. Most of the soldiers in the barracks were born in either England or Scotland a few from Wales.

Any ideas where to start?

How old was he when he married?

Have you checked freebmd for an English/Welsh birth for him?  There are 2 on freebmd but I think probably too old to be him

Have you checked Scotlands People  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Have you checked for an Irish birth

If he was born before 1881 - have you checked the 1881 census which is free on www.familysearch.org

If found to be born in Ireland - have you checked the Irish 1901

Hi Carole,

I see the birth in Birkenhead, no birth record for him in Ireland, his wife was born 1901, she is recorded as a minor on her marriage cert, under 21, he does not appear on the 1901 and 1911 census, he was living in a military base when he married 1911. I have checked the original 1911 census, all the entries are coded, military secrecy. I think my best bet is a pension record, The RAMC service records were destroyed by a German bomb. I have his service number from his medal.

He was awarded the MSM....Meritious Service Medal for service in France...his MSM medal index card is on ancestry.
He will have an entry in the London Gazette for that.

Served with 17th Field Ambulance.

The link above gives details of what they were involved in attached to 6th Div throughout Great War

Also entitled to 1914 star,British War and Victory Medals...He was acting sgt major so may feature in the Unit War Diary if it survives?? Youd have to see if its at Kew or online.
Also applied for and was issued Clasp and Roses to 14 star in May 1920.That means he was under fire before Nov 1914 an original "old contemptible"

The war diary for 17 Field Ambulance is held at Kew in WO 95/1602.
It covers the period from August 1914 to May 1919.
Unfortunately it has not been digitised yet, so is not available through Documents Online.

Thank you all,

It is a real lesson in family history, which is all a part of genealogy, they both work together.  I have learnt that the maximum period that you spent in a particular area was 6 years, then you were transferred.

I will work on, thank you all for your very generous contributions.
