Who was "Boy"?
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 17:42 BST (UK) »
Hello

Just thought I'd put a teaser on here for anyone who feels a bit of detective work is long overdue.

While wandering through the undergrowth at the Extra Mural Cemetery in Brighton today, I spotted a rather ornate headstone hiding away and looking out of place in the middle of the trees. Looking at the inscription didn't reveal very much and raised several interesting questions.

The headstone is shown below, and is transcribed as

"SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF
"BOY"
WHO WAS TAKEN SUDDENLY
AWAY
ON MAY 8TH 1932
AGED 18 YEARS"

Now, I can't think of many scenarios that hold up to much thought as to why such an ornate headstone would be erected for someone when no-one had a clue as to their real name

Any suggestions?
Maybe an identification for "Boy"?

Thinking caps on...

Glen

Interesting!

There are only 3 deaths of 18-yr-old males in the Brighton registration district in Jun qtr of 1932:

Edward G. BAKER
Frank G. HOLDER
George F. WICKENS

and just in case "Boy" was a girl (!) one 18-yr-old female:

Hazel M A REYNOLDS

Of course, "Boy" might not have died in the Brighton area.

We are assuming that the burial was human. Is it possible that a pet animal could be buried and given a headstone? I would have thought so if it is a cemetary. 18 years is a very good span for a dog.

Ooh, yes, I'm afraid my first thoughts were a dog or even a horse  ;)

Apologies to any member of the family if this isn't the case  :-[

Kind regards

Strange, I hadn't thought of a horse, but look at the evidence, a stone near a grave and in a public cemetary. Might be worth looking for the burial record.

Are/were animal burials permitted in consecrated ground?

As far as I can see it's a municipal burial ground, not church; would that make a difference?
