I go along with avm - studying this monument I think it was erected by someone who loved this person dearly.  Maybe 'Boy' was engraved in order  to keep it personal to that person only so I think I'm dropping out of this one and respecting the privacy of whoever put it there  :)

I'm sticking with "Boy" being an affectionate family (etc) name for a beloved son, brother, grandson, ward, husband or lover of the person commissioning the monument, as opposed to this reflecting any employer/employee relationship or anything involving species other than homo sapiens.

Yes, somebody who was rich enough to commission such a stone for a pet would have their own land to bury their beloved pets, wouldn't they?

Percy "Boy" Staunton??  He must have died about 1932.

Was he a real person, or a character in a Canadian novel of the 1970s?

Oh, definitely a fictional character but, then again, Davies was into ‘strange loops.’

Does this cemetery have a office on site.  If so their ledgers would be able to tell you who bought the plot & who is buried there.

Would love to know the outcome.

There is an office and very helpful staff

maybe it was a monkey

and animals dont have hands !

Monkey's do !  ;D ;D

An epitaph that is too much for a servant but possibly OK for a horse or dog.
I make no further comment.      Roy G

Everyone seems to have concentrated on a pet of some description, I think Roy made a very valid point. Have to say I did wonder about this, before reading what he wrote.

Could Boy have been the unaccepted, but much loved illegitimate child .. possibly fathered by a member of one of the overseas troops ? His maternal parents caring enough to give him a headstone, either them or an employer. The age would be a year out for a 1915 birth though ?

The Extra Mural was a private burial ground until the Borough bought it in 1956 so may well have been a pet.

I'd be curious to know how tall this headstone is, in comparison to the others. Usually they tend to be smaller than average, when it's for a pet.

A long shot, but is there a stonemason's identifying mark or name on the stone anywhere?  Would they have records?

We can only speculate until or unless someone gets the cemetary records. In the meantime I'm sticking with a pet rather than a servant.
