You wouldn't say that for a horse !

And no, you cannot bury animals in consecrated ground ...

Maybe part of the burial ground was not consecrated.

Glen, is there a Friends of Extra Mural Cemetery?  They are usually a font of information.  Brighton Council's website show the  charges for queries: http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1116106.  And there's a plan.

Can anyone  work out what it says at the foot of the stone ??

Sorry, should have included the transcription of that part as well

IF THIS HEART SHOULD EVER CEASE TO GRIEVE
WITH THY HANDS FAR FROM MINE
'TWOULD BE FOR HOPE THAT IN A LITTLE WHILE
MINE SHOULD BE CLASPED IN THINE

Far too sentimental for any animal, I would think.

On the plan, this headstone is in the section marked "Left of Rastrichs Above path" (should be Rastrick, not Rastrich, after the massive tomb of the same name). All around it are regular human gravestones, so to have a tiny plot of unconsecrated ground doesn't make any sense to me

I'd look in the local paper for an announcement shortly after the death.

I think the person buried there may have had an impediment or disability which meant he couldn't speak properly and called himself "Boy".  No unknown person of 18 would have had such a sentimental and ornate gravestone.

Does this cemetery have a office on site.  If so their ledgers would be able to tell you who bought the plot & who is buried there.

Would love to know the outcome.

To save you hunting further, I've listed all the 18 yr old deaths in the district in that quarter at reply #1 above (or at least those indexed as such on FreeBMD).
