Look up request Cheshire Regiment - Frank Payton b1889 Bury, lancs
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 22:38 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please help with a look up for any record on my grandfather, please.
Full name Frank Payton b1889 Bury, Lancs
from an old photo someone has helped me to identify the regiment as the Cheshire. I don't have any other information than that as he died when my mother was still young. all I do know is he lived all his life in Bury, Lancashire (apart from his service in the army).
Any help would be very gratefully received indeed as nothing is known about him.
Thank you
Dawn

He died in 1948

Frank Payton March qtr 1948 aged 58  Bury Vol 10b Page 890

His birth reg shows that he was just Frank - no middle name but I cannot find him on the WW1 Medal Roll or any other WW1 records

He married Mary E Roby in March qtr 1927 in Bury

Here he is with his parents in 1891 - 15 Britannia Yard Paradise St Bury.  All b Bury except Eliza

John Payton 40 bricksetters labourer
Eliza  36 b Cork City Ireland
Mary  9
Frank 1
RG12 Piece 3138 Folio 6 Page 5

In 1901 he is living alone with his mother Eliza.  She is shown as married but no husband in household and no death for John between 1891-1901
RG13 Piece 3646 Folio 62 Page 17

Birthyear a bit out but John Payton may have died in Bury in 1913 aged 59

The free 1911 index shows Eliza (48) Frank (21)  and  Mary Ann Payton aged 29 all in Bury but no John

John Payton was the son of Francis & Sabina Payton both b Ireland per 1861 census

Hi Dawn,

my grandfather served in the Cheshire Regiment, and I requested information from the Cheshire Regiment Museum using the form as below

http://www.cheshiremilitarymuseum.co.uk/media/517/research_form.pdf

I received wonderful information well worth the fee charged.

My husband and I also visited the museum, taking a photo of grandad and his brother in uniform also a photo of his medals the staff were very helpful.

Mary

Hi Domingo,
I think that will definately have to be my next port of call, although I am not sure how much help they will be able to give me as I only have an old photo and his birth details... which is not much to go on. I don't have any numbers for him or any idea of which part of the Cheshire he served in. I will definately give it a go. THANK YOU!
Dawn

Ady... I was beginning to wonder that myself as I looked into the Cheshire and some of them didn't go overseas. I really appreciate the help, thank you.
