Help i'm stuck - where do i go from here?!
« on: Wednesday 23 March 05 10:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

Can anyone help!  Im not very experienced at this and have become stuck without really getting that far back!

I have traced grandparents back to 1821 and have found their marriage in 1846.  But now that i am pre registration and pre census records i am not sure what to do next!!

I am finding it difficult to locate me ggg grandfathers family.  I have found a maybe mother and father but cannot be sure and the records for my areas seem to be scarce at best!!

Does anyone know where i can find marriage and death details for St Gluvias/Mabe/Budock/Falmouth for late 1700's and early to mid 1800's

Can anyone recommend any other sites to check out other than Ancestry/Genes Reunited.  And how do i find family connections once i am back beyond census records - is there anything i am forgetting to check?

Any help would be much appreciated - you all seem to get back so far i must be missing something!

Thanks very much

Chris

Hi

You can try www.familysearch.org.

This has a lot of parish records but is by no means comprehensive but according to recommendations by those in the know "it should be your first port of call when searching prior to 1837".

Hope this helps

Also try the Cornwall Online parish clerks, found at:
http://west-penwith.org.uk/opc.htm

It never hurts to try a Google search on e.g. Cornwall parish registers.

Look at the Cornwall page of Genuki:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/

Order the film/fiche from your local LDS Family History Centre for a small fee.

Look in your local reference library (sorry, I don't know where you are in the world, so if you in Oz/NZ, they are unlikely to be able to help)- you may find some printed parish registers there.

And last but not least, try the Cornwall Records Office in Truro:
http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/cro/default.htm
There is nothing quite like a "field trip" to the place which will have all the records at hand.  It is also the best sort of research you can do, if you are able.  :D

Thanks Nell,

Some of these i have tried but others are certainly worth a try, i have made enquiries with the Records Office and unfortunately it looks as though the area and time i am looking for none of the records have survived!  Typical, makes life very difficult when i am not very good with all this in the first place!!

Do you know how to search for more modern info ie 1900's, i know i can get certs from registry office but i need to know the info to ask for them!  Any ideas greatfully received.

Thanks again

Chris

All births marriages and deaths are online at www.1837online.co.uk - you search each page as it is in the books at the Family Record Centre in London.  You do have to pay though.  There is a FreeBMD site at rootsweb which has some but not all.  It is worth trying there first but be aware that it is limited coverage.  When you have got the date, place and reference number you write to the local registrar or you can order them via the link on 1837.  £7 each.

Chris
I'm not sure if this is relevant but have you tried obtaining 1841/51 Cornwall census information from http://freecen.rootsweb.com/   I've recently tried to find an ancestor on that site and noticed that Cornwall seems to be transcribed.

Good luck with your search
