What is going on here?
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 00:04 BST (UK) »
Went to a local cemetary a few weeks ago and surprisingly I didnt have to look very far. The first stone near the gate was the one I was looking for. But that was where my luck ran out. I got home and thought I would order the birth and death certs for this child but then got stuck.

Is it me or does something not add up when you look for him on BMD or Ancestry????

Oops! Thought I might add that the family bible says he was born in Wortley, Leeds on 08/03/1893 which matches up with the headstone.

David.

I see what you mean

Either:
[1] The death registration in the Dec qtr of 1896 is for a different child
Or:
[2] George's death was registered a year after he died
Or
[3] His death registration has been incorrectly indexed by the GRO

[1] Seems a little too much of a coincidence.
[2] Seems highly unlikely.

My vote is [3]. The entry is clearly for 1896 but from a comparatively modern GRO index. Possibly a mistake? I suppose you could contact the Basford register office and ask them to check.

Is it the local records office I need to contact in Leeds?

Hi

I would check the cemetery burial record to confirm date of burial. I have a case where my ancestors headstone is 1 year out, a close look shows that the headstone was obviously done after his widow died a few years later and whoever ordered it got the date wrong.

The death registered in Basford in Dec Qtr 1896 is likely to be one of the two George Arthur STEVENSON births registered in Basford in June Qtr 1894.

The GRO prepare their index at the end of each quarter so its extremely unlikely they made a mistake.

When was the entry made in the family bible? do the entries look as if they have all been written at different times? I'm wondering if the birth year was calculated from the headstone.

Andy

The bible writing is older than records written about 1920's births so shouldnt be far from around the time. I'll contact the chapel and see what happens!
Thanks.
