WW1 medal ? card ?
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 17:24 BST (UK) »
I just found this on Ancestry.

Its of my fathers step-father ... who is the man I asked about in a previous thread, who was a P O in the navy.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,447493.0.html

Can someone explain it all to me please ?

And if he had been in the navy, why would he enter WW1 in the army ??

This guy looks to have only been issued the british war medal....so with the absence of the victory medal it may have been he spent duration in india or another garrison location not in a "war zone"
Your man may have done his naval time and wanted to serve king and country so volunteered for army service...also it may be someone with same name

the number seems to be a post 1917 Territorial one but unless we have his record its hard to prove.when does his naval record end

He was a P.O. on the 1901 census ... I found him on the 1911, but I'm too mean to get the full thing from that as he's not a real relative, just my fathers step-father ... How can I find out when he left the navy ?

I've got him on my fathers indentures as his guardian where he signs as a 'fabric worker' ... that was in 1924 so after WW1.

It doesn't appear to be a Territorial number Ady, but it is probably quite a late issue: 1917?
Looking at Geoff's SE, a lot of the casualties with similar numbers are post-war, home deaths.

That whole batch of numbers 21015* to RGA were only issued British War Medals so they must have been garrisoning somewhere.
India,Malta?? tried to find someones service record with similar number and regiment...unsuccessful so far!

Thanks Mod ... I forgot !

This is about Alfred Davis Poplett, and I've got his record now from the NA ... and it is a long list of all the ships he served on from Boy 2nd Class  up to Petty Officer 1st Class !   He appears to have left the navy in March 1908 'Invalided' (though it doesn't say how).   Then in WW1 he is in the Royal Garrison Artillery, so UK based it would seem.

He joined the navy at 17 as a baker ( ! ) and after WW1 became a 'fabric worker' ... what a varied life he led !    I wonder what he did between 1908 and 1914 ?

Looks like getting the 1911 census to satisfy your curiosity :)

If you can find a service record for a lad with similar number it may shed light on where he went in WW1...Possibly India or other part of Empire not directly in conflict as there is absence of a Victory Medal.

He was in the RGA in his late 30's, so I suspect wouldn't have been sent out to India ... or might he ?

Anyway, having checked the 1911, I find he's recorded with the wrong wife !   I.e. not the woman married to my step-grandfather ... so I could be chasing entirely the wrong Alf !

Thanks for all your help... I need to think further on this one.   I almost wish I hadn't started this step-line !
