Is it possible to tell which regiment this is?
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 18:00 BST (UK) »
Hello

This photo is from the family collection from my Grandma's house which we inherited on her death.  It's a long shot but is it possible to tell what  World War 1 regiment these men belong to?

Our family are all from the Wigan/Manchester area - and we think that one of the men is possibly my Great Grandfather Jackson who was born in Blackley.

I've a suspicion that the men in the photo haven't yet fought or seen any action as they look too unscathed? But I may be wrong.

Thank you for any help, like I say - a long shot.

Crompton - Aspull, Farnworth
Gerrard - Wigan, Bolton, Westhoughton

I suspect they are Royal Field Artillery possibly Territorial soldiers.
can you get a close up of it to confirm.
If you have access to his medals his number will be on the edge.

did he live at 25 ----- street wigan and may have been awarded the military medal...if so there are 4 badley damaged pages of a service record on ancestry.

Hello

Thank you very much for the reply - I've tried to blow it up, but not very successfully - and now I can't get it to attach on here, it's a bit blurred and I still can't really tell much. Unfortunately I have no medals - well, not that I know of. I'll ask my mother who may know if we do.

Kind regards - and many thanks for the kind reply

Hello!

Thank you again - his name was John Henry Jackson - and I believe he lived in Thomas Street, Hindley Green, Wigan  at that time.

I'm just looking through all the JHJ's on Ancestry - there are a fair few to say the least!

Thank again, your help is appreciated :)

Hello Kathryn,

Is there a publisher or anything on the back of the card?

The hut looks standard issue.
The couple of shoulder titles I can see look like 3 letters only, so I'm not sure about Territorial.

The writing on the hut wall could be "E Sub, 462 Siege".
I can't find any evidence of a 462 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery having existed though. It may however have been a Home unit.

Hello there

Thank you for the reply :)

There is nothing at all on the back of the photo unfortunately - it's just blank.

Earlier today I spoke to my mother about it all, she said that alongside the photo there was this little artefact, which I've taken a photo of.  Whether it sheds any light I don't know.  It says on it 'Turkish Prisoner 19191' and was with that photo...

Hi Forester,
The tea bucket confirms your observation of the chalk writing on the hut wall.
