Using address searching at FindMyPast the only George Street that comes up in Leeds is in North Leeds. Even if I search for Hunslet rather than Leeds, this is what comes up. However, according to the index there is no number 55 (I have not looked at actual records).

When I do the same searches in 1871 everything seems to be Great George Street.

Does this help?

I could not find George Street. I think there is a 55 Great George Street. The building look of the right age for 1870. Opposite the hospital. I know the person living at this address was buried in Leeds General Cemetry in 1870

1 September 1860  Leeds Times: An article about an inquest following an alleged manslaughter of a man by his wife "in an obscure court in George's-street, Leeds". One of the key witnesses was a Mrs Julia Davis wife of John Davis, tailor, 20 George's-street.

I have found the Davis couple (as Davies) in the 1861 census at 20 George Street. (RG Leeds;ED7; piece,3377; folio, 101). The enumerators route Dyer Street>George Street>Ebenezer Street establishes that this is the street shown here:

This street is, as you say, in central Leeds. There is not a 55 George Street in this part of the census, but the first entries are one property in Dyer Street followed by 38 George Street (Albion Inn, no sign of this on the map), then numbers descending, so I suppose it is possible that George Street crossed a boundary and higher street numbers are elsewhere.

Thank you very much, it really helps to understand where the Gilchrist family lived and worked, nearby. Two deaths from consumption. Thanks to your help I managed to find a photo of Valley Cottages, Moor Allerton, before they were pulled down.

Keep them coming – I enjoy combining census and newspaper research with maps.

I am sure there will be more to come. Painting the picture is so helpful.

Looking at my Leeds map (1889/1900) George Street is surrounded by a number of ale houses and located in the gereral area of the current Leeds Kirkgate market.

I think that this information is spot on, as the family had a watch making workshop at Maltmill-Yard. Lowerhead-Row, which stretched from the junction with New Briggate to Vicar Lane. Do you have a map for George Street and surrounding area. It would be most appreciated.

A side by side view showing George Street just to the north of  Kirkgate Market.

This is the same street as "George's Street" shown on the map that I linked to in reply #29

Lowerhead-row to the northwest is the east end of the modern Headrow.
