Search by mother's name only
« on: Monday 05 April 10 06:57 BST (UK) »
Dear Members,

Why can't I search for the MOTHER'S name who gave birth in the UK between 1881 and 1884. When the kid has no dad the mother's name is the only way.
And the other option I would like is to search for an address as well.

Kind regards
Steve

Hi, you can on the IGI.

Enter mother's name and child's firstname only.

Thanks Merryhow,

I have tried but it will not work the way you have suggested. Please read my post again. The kid has no dad. Due to the fact he has no dad I can only supply his first  name. Hope you understand the unique way I would like to search.
I would also like to search just using the address in between the census years.

Regards
Steve

Merrybow is correct.

If you put the child's first name ONLY, and the mother's first and surname in the "Mother"  boxes, select a region and country, you will get results if there are any to get!  You do say between 1881 and 1884, but the IGI stops at 1875 for most records, so it is unlikely there will be a result for you.

I don't understand - if you know the mother's surname, and you know the child's first name, then he will have been registered under the surname of the mother.  As I understand it, if the parents were not married, then the father would have had to have given his permission for the child to be given his surname.

Or, are you saying that you only know the mother's first name?

As far as I know there is no way of searching by address, although if you have an idea where the child was born then you can limit searches to county or registration district.

Hi Steve,

I think that you may need to be more precise about what you are searching for and where you are searching (which internet resources you have tried).

Information about the location of the birth, if you have it (e.g. from census details) may help people to be much more precise about what resources are available that can be applied to this search.

Thanks for all your help so far folks,

I know exactly where all the family lived and where the kids were dumped at their grandparents house from 1881 to 1906 but the lass I am tracing changed her name and then married again. She gave both kids her name between 1881 and 1883 as appears on the 1891 UK Census. But when she was married in 1885 she said she was a widow with a new name....a very very busy lass. The IGI dates from 1881 onwards are a bit thin. Unless I can search PURELY by mother's name only and/or ADDRESS only then I will have to purchase about 15 certificates  :(

Kind regards
Steve

I think that you may need to search, or get help to search, local records for baptisms but for that you would need to know what religion.  Although, if you do have very precise addresses, that should narrow it down to a few possible churches/chapels.

If you can't make it to the local archives/ county records office then a request on the thread local to their location might find someone who can do a search for you, but you will need to limit it by dates/area etc. so you are not asking for too much work.

Alternatively, there may already be (even full) transcriptions for the churches in the area that you require that other members have access to, but they can't know that if they don'y know what location you are interested in.

[added: if it's London, for example, the LMA records are on line at Ancestry, available for free in many local libraries]
