Hello Tom ,
Brake plough was a  collection of cottages in an area known as Kerlaw in Stevenston, if I mind right you could walk through it to Sinclair street.

Thanks for reminding me of it . If you send me a pm  I can inform you of a site that may have a few images of it .
                                         Regards Brosie.

I believe I am a direct descendent of Matthew Wylie and Elizabeth Baird.  Tom isn't a common name in our branch of the family.  Lots of Matthew, William, Hugh, James, Janet, Elizabeth, Mary.  I'm also doing some research into my family which I believe were in Stevenston in the mid to late 1700s, then Saltcoats, then Ardrossan. My branch eventually moved to Glasgow around 1900 and then to Dundee around 1920.

Here are Brakplough and Brakplough Cottages on the 1856(1855) 25 inch OS map. The burn is Quarrelburn (see name of quarry to the NW)

And here is the same area on the 1896 (1895) map with Quarrel Burn labelled.

An article in The Ardrossan and Salcoats Herald 6/2/1864 reports on the Ardrossan Farmers' Society Ploughing Match:

Quote
Through the great liberality of Gavin Fullarton Esq., the match was again held in the field called "Baillie's Park", on the farm of Breakplough.

If you scroll down a bit from the handwritten listing, you'll see that the transcriber has read the first unreadable word as Quarrelburn and the second as pronounce, giving the full transcription as, "These Cottages are on the South Side of Quarrelburn and are occupied by the Servants of Gavan Fullarton Esqr who is the proprietor. -
Some of the occupiers pronounce and Call these Cottages Brackleheugh but no satisfactory information can be obtained in support of the name. -"
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
