Patrick RAFFERTY - Ballywholan, Clogher, Tyrone
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 01:23 BST (UK) »
My G/grandfather was married twice.  My grandfather and two siblings were born to his first wife (married approximately 1880 going by the birth of their first child 1885).  I have found his second wife on the census for 1901 and 1911 but I can't find a record of his first wife (my g/grandmother) and I don't know her name. Can anyone help me?

Can anyone help me trace the record of my g/grandfather's first wife.  I don't know her name but I think they married around 1880.

The birth certificates of your grandfather and his 2 siblings will show their mother's name.
Civil registration index is online (free), See here-

Added- no need to start another thread as duplicate requests cause needless confusion and work for those trying to help- I've merged your 2 posts and placed on TYRONE board.

Thank you for the link but I can't seem to get his mother's information - I am new to researching and maybe I've done something wrong as it doesnt show his father (Patrick) either.

Hi,
    Two possibilities for Patrick's marriage.
10 Jun 1775 Margaret McBride Ballygawley Roman Catholic Church, Clogher.
8 Jul 1880    Bridget Tague Clogher Roman Catholic Church.

Regards

EDIT  For 1775 read 1875.

The link I gave you is for the civil index which will list child's name, registration district, date/quarter, volume and page numbers which are the details you need to order the certificate.

Thank you so much.  I will have to have a look into this.  My feelings are that it would be Bridget. This is a mystery we have quite recently stumbled on.  My Mother and Aunt, both in their mid-eighties, never knew their Grandad and also never knew that he had been married twice.   They get so much pleasure finding out about their own family history.  Many thanks again.

Thank you again.  My problem is that I haven't got an exact birth date (they really didnt bother with birthdays). The details shown on the census 1901 and 1911 we seem to loose a year. I think my grandad was born in June.  Is there any way I could view the certificate before I purchase it because I dont think there is enough detail in the record I have found to make sure it is him.

No, you have to purchase the certificate to see the details.
