Clara (Mary?) White b. 1838
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 10:07 BST (UK) »
I've come to a dead end with my gt-gt-gt-grandmother, Clara Richards, nee White. Appears on census 1871 onwards & in birth certs for children + own death certs, as Clara born in Green Hill, Leics. In 1861 census shown as Mary, which is actually the name of her baby daughter. No trace of her birth or marriage. her husband, John Richards, from Colston Bassett, appears to work as agricultural labourer in Hose in 1851 census, which is where both live in 1861 census. Any help would be welcome to get past this brick wall! Thanks!!

Wow! Thanks Xin, Diddy & Mike,
Your info is really helpful!
Yes, the 1871 family in Colston Bassett is mine: Mary Elizabeth (gt-gt-gran), John William, Clara L, Sarah M (known in family as Tal) & Ada Emma.
The big problem with poorer families, whose girls go into service, is trying to track their whereabouts pre-marriage. Also, I know from Mary Elizabeth in 1881 census that the householder can put down the current home village for his servants' place of birth, rather than asking them!
William & Mary look like a good bet for Clara's parents, as her eldest girl is Mary & her eldest son has William for his middle name.
Diddy, it would be great if you get a chance to check things in your local library.  It took me a long time & several visits to Colston Bassett & Nottingham to track down John Richards death (1871-81), as the PRO had no record of it ... finally found an almost illegible entry on microfiche for 1875 & (hoping a family tale was true) found newspaper stories of the accident in their records too. Sometimes, even post-1837, local research is the only avenue (but not that easy when you are no longer 'local'!).
Your help is really appreciated.
