Moses METCALF. Service Record.
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 17:45 BST (UK) »
Assistance required please. ;D
I am looking for the service record and medal card for Moses METCALF, Born 1894, Died 18/09/1916, Flanders, France.
He was Private S/n 18220 Moses METCALF, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. He is listed as a CWGC casualty but I am unable to find his service record.
Could some see if they can locate it as I have drawn a blank.

Thank You.

The National Archives Documents Online has his MIC, which you can download for £2 by card payment.  Enter the surname in one box and the number [digits only] in another and bingo!
Ancestry may have it, free, also his service records, but I do not have a subscription.

Bilge,

According to his MRC he was entitled to the 1915 Star, Victory Medal and British Medal.

He went to France 22/12/1915.

His name is also spelt "Metcalfe"

Hi Bilge!

Upwards of 65% of WW1 service records were destroyed in the German Bombing of London in September 1940, so if you can not locate Moses' it probably no longer exists.

Nil Desperandum

You now know his battalion, with that you can get the battalion War Diary from Nat Archives.

That gives a day by day record of what the battalion was doing, and will show you the battles they fought in the 9 months he was with them in France. It in fact gives you a much better guide to what he was doing than his service record, which would only say something like "posted to France 22/12.15" "killed in action 18/9/1916" with little or no detail in between

There is someone on the Great War Forum website who has a Shropshire Light Infantry database

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20389&hl=shropshire+light+infantry

Might be worth having a read and posting to see if she has anything on your man,
